Does a TC affect IQ on L lenses

Just got my 5DII :clap:

When I sell my 40D to pay for some of it, I will be missing a focal range, as I will have 17-40L and 70-200L (plus nifty fifty and BIGMOS) but no 17-85.



Buying a 24-70L or 24-100L is an option but very expensive.



My question is, if I use a TC on the 17-40L will it affect IQ by much. In other words can I get away with a TC and not another L lens at this moment in time.

I don't think it will work with the 17-40?
Which TC are you thinking about - check the manufacturer's website and they will list compatibility.
 
with the 50 as well its highly debatable if you'd miss the range between your two zooms. You can always use your legs ;)
 
All teleconverters degrade IQ. It's just much less pronounced with a really good lens. I *think* you'd need to use a 3rd party one with the 17-40mm e.g. Kenko Pro 300 DGX 1.4x. A 2x teleconverter would cause havoc with the IQ of a short zoom lens, in all probability.

I wouldn't recommend either with a short zoom, perhaps others have tried though?
 
Most (all??) TCs are designed for lenses above 100mm.
 
You cannot fit a Canon Extender onto a 17-40. It physically won't fit. The Extender has a protruding front element, but the 17-40 doesn't have a recessed rear element.

You probably can fit a third-party teleconverter, but as other people have noted they're really not designed for wide angle lenses and the IQ will probably take a big hit.
 
Use both 1.4 and 2x on my Bigmos and even both together.
