Does anybody shoot video on a Nikon dSLR?

Yes
I am thinking about getting a cropped sensor dSLR that shoots video. It will be to use alongside my D700, in good light when I need a bit more reach and , of course, to shoot video.

Am I right in thinking that the D90 is the only cropped camera that fits the bill?

Has anybody shot any video on a Nikon body and got any comments recommending it or otherwise compared to using a dedicated video camera?

I use a D5000, video quality is pretty good though limited to 5mins at a time. The sound on the other hand isn't that great. Anything moderately loud or lots of people talking and it suffers. Mainly because it records in mono and is compressed.

I used the video on my D90 whilst on holiday and found it to be pretty good. Although as mentioned above I found the sound was not brilliant. It also does 20 min clips.

I can't help thinking that video on a DSLR (at least for now) is little more than a marketing gimmick - because they can't find any other way to 'improve' on current models. I REALLY hope video on DSLR bodies is not going to be the norm.

I have a D90. I wish they hadn't bothered putting the video on it. I tried it out when i first got it for about 5 seconds and have never used it since.
I have a video camera that does a much better job.

Nothing against you personally but I have never really understood this attitude. As long as the video is well implemented, does not interfere with it's primary function (being a camera), does not compensate for a poor camera (certainly don't think that's the case so far) and does not stunt DSLR development I can only see video on an SLR as a positive thing!

Fair enough it's not for everyone and if that's the case don't use, but for those like me who don't have a video cam for the little use it would get I think it's a great way of capturing short clips whilst not having to carry around any extra equipment. Couple that with the ability to use high quality low light lenses (not to mention VR) and in my eyes it really is win-win.
