Does anyone know prices in Hong Kong or websites where I can find out?

No
I know I can check ebay, but they are obviously making a profit to normal Hong Kong high street prices.

Would like to know what the going rate is on:
- Nikon 50mm f1.4d
- nikon 50mm or 35mm f1.8d

as i believe items are cheaper over there

Search in the UK thoroughly, as I bought a new 5DII last week that is advertised in HK for £1,799 from a UK dealer in London for £1,739 with a 3 year warranty thrown in and I can collect.......

The Nikon 50mm f/1.8D you mention above is £98.81 frm digitalrev in HK from the London dealer I speak above its £105 hardlly pays to get something shipped in from HK IMO.

sorry should have made it clearer. my folks are going over there, and i've heard camera gear is cheaper.

Over in Malaysia I found a 7D with an 18-135mm lens for around £1300 - where as that's the same cost for body only in the UK. It really depends where you look and how hard you look. Managed to get such a deal by going to about 30 different retails and haggling wiht them all until one gave it to me for that.

The best source of HK prices I've found is this one - it's a shop I went into personally when I was in HK - and have bought from them. Generally you were able to achieve prices around 5% less than these if actually in the store....

You may find it comes up in HK dollars - but there is an option to change to pounds...

That should give you an indication of current prices there - although with the exchange rates taking a hammering over the last year - they aren't as competitive as they once were:

Ah if they are actually going over there - there's a shop 2 doors down from the one I linked above - and I got the best deal of all there, but they didn't ship internationally. They didn't treat me like a tourist, it's off the beaten track slightly - and I made a great saving compared to UK - however that was 2 years ago now...

We go to Hong Kong on average every 18 months to 2 years - I get through suits pretty quick and the works out cheap. Each time I go I think about buying new camera kit - apart from buying a SB600 once and very nearly getting done buying something they substituted at point of sale, I have never found anything worth the risk - and I have been to a lot of camera stores and never really found a bargain. The ebay sellers are generally reluctant to offer much of a discount from the postage charges to deliver locally - I would advise against going to some of the areas where they know you have a load of cash i your pocket.

Fortress is the largest electronics shop in HK and I think they are pretty reliable and have fixed prices, there are also a couple of camera stores in the huge mall by the Star Ferry terminal - beware that one in Star City sells mostly refurbs, the other was where they tried to swap the tested flash for another (that I later showed was defective before handing over the money).

It is a natural choice to buy from the camera shops on Nathan Road, do yourself a favour and just keep walking. If you don't get scammed take it personally - you didn't look like you were worth the effort.

Just in case you are wondering, a suit CAN be made in 8 to 10 hours but the quality is not great. A cheap suit will range from 4000HK$ but expect to pay around 7000HK$ for something worthwhile. I would expect at least two fittings and this wil be time consuming. Shirts around 200HK$ and up.

thanks

yeah i know there are some dodgy places, but would get a friend to look into it if it was viable. alot of scammers out there, even the shops.

so far:

Nikon AF 50mm f/1.4D Prime 定焦 2,150 18/10/2009 Broadwxy
Nikon AF 50mm f/1.8D Prime 定焦 880 3/6/2009 Sham Shui Po
good reference, so not actually that much cheaper

..one other bit of advice - when I showed them the prices on ygdragon, an English speaking customer quietly explained that they were not tourist prices...

Chris

True alot of them won't sell at that price IF they can avoid it, so best use that list as a guide only and be happy if you can get close to those prices listed. They are quite stubborn too in the Mong kok area where they deal with tourist everyday, so walking away and threatening to buy elsewhere usually won't work.
I would recommend places like Tincheung and Echo photo instead, they are smaller stores and will usually stick to the prices mentioned on the net and try to match other stores prices.
Also in HK money/cash is King, do all haggling etc in cash, credit cards usually attract a 2% fee.

I think that you would be better buying the lens in UK at the best price - it is simple to get around HK but I wonder how much effort your folks need to go to to save £20 or so - and indeed if it is worth the risks?

Too many other great things to see and do there.

Chris

fair shout, if it's only £20 difference not much point.

i was going to see if maybe the 50mm f1.4d was alot cheaper, but it doesn't seem it (without being there)

I think if it were 18 months ago - you'd see a big enough difference to justify it - but at current exchange rates, the benefit is less apparrent.. I'm sure you could still save a few pounds, but it won't be what it would have been in the past... It'll probably take another year before exchange rates strengthen again....

thanks all. having read a few posts, think i'm going to just get it myself, but definately worth me book marking this page for future reference.

going to stick with the cheaper f1.8 model and save the cash for something else.
while on ebay some hong kong ebay sellers to uk are around £70 for the 50mm nikon f1.8d, however it doesn't state shipping cost, so will check those out or just look for a used one
