Does dust inside a lens really matter?

I am considering buying a friends Canon 24-105mm lens, but upon inspection noticed there are several dust particles trapped inside. Although clearly visible when looking straight through the lens, they have no noticeable impact on pictures I have taken (including snaps of plain light and dark backgrounds).

I see many people in the FS forums asking whether there is "any dust" as if it may be a big issue, but if it does not affect IQ should I care?

Is dust really a problem, or is it something that should just be accepted and ignored?
 
Eventually dust finds its way into all lenses.
If it was a mass of fine dust I would be bothered.
a few visible particles is about par for the course.
If the price is right and every thing else is excellent to mint... go for it.
 
Personally, I wouldn't worry at all about dust inside a lens. Zoom lenses in particular will attract dust over a period of time - not so much with prime lenses. I have lenses that are nearly 15 years old with dust specks inside and they are still pin sharp.

I'm no digital expert as I still use film, but I understand that dust on the sensor is what causes problems with digital cameras, but not so the lens itself.
 
Thanks for the comments. I would describe the lens as "well used" with a few scratches and scrapes, but fully functional. The glass itself is unblemished and the price being asked is £500. This seems reasonable to me considering the prices these go for within the forums and ebay. It is boxed with hood, caps etc.

I guess I could always get it serviced if the dust ever becomes a problem.
 
£500 seems steep if it's "well used".

I picked up a mint example for £600
 
I think maybe folk are more concerned that the 'dust' might actually be mould :shrug:

I guess it depends whether a £100 saving is worth a few scratches. The scratches are small and of course do not affect performance. My only doubt is whether I should spend £500 on a lens?

I've had the cheaper alternatives.

The 24-105 is a great lens. I wouldn't be without mine.
 
I got an old Sigma 300 prime off flee-bay and it mentioned a bit of dust.

When I got it it was a mass of fine dust and does make the piccys look soft.............................:'(

Could send it away for cleaning I suppose but it would be around £95 :eek:
