I dont have a manual with mine, and not tracked this down on the online one I am using.

Anyone know if I can take black and white pics or do I have to make them on the computer once I have all that set-up?

most probably u can. Its called Monochrome but dont know how to explain it to get you there. Its rather easy though just experiment a bit with setting

shoot in colour, though thinking that you'll black and white the photos later, and then do a proper black and white conversion in lightroom / photoshop. It'll look faaaar better :)

Convert with softward - not your camera. If you shoot RAW you will get a colour image anyway.

You can download or just view a pdf of the manual on Canon's USA web site. It's called Rebel XSi.

Page 67 talks about "Picture Style" and page 68 mentions "Monochrome."

However, if you shoot JPEG you're stuck with mono but if you shoot RAW+JPEG you will have a B&W version and a RAW to revert to if you change your mind and want colour.

Linky to the manual.
