Thanks for the help on the long lens questions.

What I now want to do is change my EF-S 17-85 IS USM for something that will give me a bit more quality. I don't think there's too much wrong with this lens but having used a EF 17-40mm f/4.0 L USM for a day or two for landscapes on a tripod I've found that I'm getting more consistent results and % wise - far more shots that I'm happy with.

I did however find I missed the longer end of the lens as 40mm suddenly felt a bit short.

Having looked at what focal lengths are available I considered the following....

EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM - (more or less a full frame range = to the 17-85) Love the idea of the extra reach but can't help feel that 24 is too long at the short end on a cropped sensor. I feel I might end up reaching for my Sigma 10-20 too often.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM - Not as long at the long end and the same issue regarding the short end being long on a crop but even without IS I like the idea of 2.8. Whilst I still think I'd be grabbing my Sigma for wider shots - If I wasn't thinking mainly of landscapes this would be my choice.

Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0 L USM / Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L II USM - Love the short end but then I'm running out at the long end.

At the moment I'm drawn to either the EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM and and grab the Sigma 10-20 when needed OR Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0 L USM

I know more zoom tends to compromise IQ but Is there a lens out there (any brands) with the quality of the above but with a similar range to the 17-85 on a crop body ?

Any advice or pointers appreciated.

Cheers

Phil

The only one not there on your list as far as I can see is the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS - but again not long on the zoom, but quality, and built for a cropped body...

Hi Chris - is that you previously on another forum ?

Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS seems to get a good review....

24mm is nowhere near 17 at the wide end. Brilliant full frame lens, but not for me on a crop.

Goregeous lens, but big, heavy, expensive and no IS. And 24 again.

Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0 L USM / Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L II USM - Love the short end but then I'm running out at the long end.

Fab lenses. But only on full frame.

17-55 is a no brainer IMHO. Good range, f/2.8, IS and sharpest of the lot. New 15-85 IS is also very nice, also well sharp I think (not used one) but f/3.5-5.6 is not f/2.8.

Here we go again 2 lenses for the price of 2. Is it just L glass love, buy the 24-105mm because its an L, then because it actually doesn't give you wide angle, buy another lens as well. :cuckoo:

Personally, these ultrawide angles lenses, probably the pick of them are the 11-16 or 12-24 tonk's are more quirky lenses than true landscape lenses unless you like the fisheye effect. The 10-22mm I've got rarely comes out of the bag because it use is quite limited.

The 24-105 or 24-70 lenses ain't suitable for a cropped sensor camera, you lose 1/2 the capability of the lens because it frame like a 38-168mm or 38-112mm lens. The 15-85mm EF-S is definitely better than the 17-85mm, but not in the league of the 17-40mm, 17-55mm or 17-50.

As Hoppy said, the best lens to go for is the 17-55mm f2.8 EF-S or the tamron 17-50mm f2.8 (IS) or (non IS) as an alternative.

24-XXmm lenses work really nicely with 12-24/10-22 lens. The overlap is perfect and it was never a problem to me.

Thanks for that.

Thanks Pete - It's not a case of two lenses for the price of two as I already have a wide lens in fact the reason for my question was to try and identify one lens to cover a range similar to my 17-85.

It's not "L love" as I don't actually own an L lens at the moment and certainly don't feel inadequate without one ;) which is why I was asking for other suggestions. I was just using those lenses as examples of focal ranges.

As for the cropped issue - I appreciate that I wouldn't be getting the full benefit on my current digital body but I also use film - something which my EF-S doesn't allow.

I guess it's a case of how much I use and value that area between 16/17mm and 24mm.

Having had the 24-70L and 24-105L I now use a 17-55 on a crop camera. I really like the lens.

Thanks Paul - that's worth knowing.
