Stopped it down so the immediate foreground was very dark, maybe too dark ?

It is nicely framed by the trees, but I do think it is a bit dark, good idea though.

this any better ? I think it has too much foreground in it and its also starting to lose the detail in the background ?

The brightened version looks a lot better, but I agree wiht yourself that there might be a smidgen too much in the foreground which detracts from the view.

Doesn't work for me I'm afraid, the brightened version does look better and the idea of the framing of the trees is good but the image itself has little impact imho.
