Does web host affect Google ranking?

Possibly an easy question for someone in the know, but does it matter who you host your site with?
For instance two identical sites, (in all but name) but hosted by two different companies, would it be likely that one would show up in Google better than the other?

Oh, and does it make a difference how long a site has been running in terms of it showing up?

I think the hosting company would only count with Google if they also hosted dubious sites like link farms etc and other no-no black hat things.

And the longevity of a site does (or did) matter to Google.

If you are planning a new site then you don't want to do what a lot of people seem to do which is put it up unfinished.

Unless you put a 'no-follow, no index' command in the meta name section then Google may index it and give it a very low rating.

Yes, it matters on both counts. If you are UK based choose a hosting company with UK based servers, (not just a UK company!). The cheaper hosting companies use foreign based servers.

And Google does prefer sites that have been around for some time - but it much prefers sites which are updated regularly. So an old site that has never changed will be less welcome than one a year old which is updated every few days.
