Yes
i was doing some close up shots of a flower with a kit zoom set at 45..crop factor 2
and set the f at 22 and suitable speed
now i see the shots i realise i was too close to get decent dof
so i checked the dof with this calculator

bloody handy site

but i see the hyperfocal distance for my 6" shot is 236.7"...!!
can anyone explain please
i thought the h.d. would be somewhere betweent the dof markers
cheers

I'm not sure I follow.. the hyperfocal distance is a function of the lens and the aperture, the distance to subject isn't relevant. But neither is having acceptable focus at the distant horizon when photographing flowers close-up! ;)

Yes, you'll find that hyperfocal distance doesn't change once you've input lens and aperture (and pre-set the camera format). HFD is the maximum distance you can get accceptably sharp at a given focal length and f/number. Therefore it always has infinity at the far end, down to closer range.

HFD does not apply to macro. It's really only useful with wide-ish lenses and landscapes.

thanks both you guys...
thats 40 years of ignorance removed and well and easily explained...and i can understand it

LOL you're welcome Geoff.

Maybe with macro you're thinking of the optimum focus point for DoF, often referred to as 'one third in' rule.

That only applies when you know both the near and far limits, like a group shot, and doesn't apply to landscapes with long distance to the background.

It doesn't work well for close ups either, when the zone of DoF is much closer to 50/50 in front/behind.

i think in the meantime since i dont have a carry around calculator or an i phone i will resort to using my dof preview and live view as i used to do with 35mm equipment..
of course on that equipment the focus ring had dof markings to set against the aperture ring.
my present lens is a kit lens and doesnt even have a decent manual focussing ring
