Hello,

Right.. I am CONFUSED... I have a domain, louiseknightphotography.co.uk there is nothing on it yet, the company hosting my site (not 123reg) have set me up 2 email addresses, so I have downloaded thunderbird to be able to receive incoming mail, but during the set-up, I've gotten all confused with what's what..!

I have 2 email addresses, one's info@ and the other mail@. I have been given two DNS servers Or something?! EXAMPLE: XX00.blah.co.uk and XX01.blah.co.uk

HOW do I get this to work..? I thought I'd set it all up correctly, but when I click on 'get mail' in thunderbird, a message pops up saying: cannot connect to mail server XX00.blah.co.uk; the connection was refused. I set it up as an IMAP server, rather than a POP server thingumy, and wasn't really sure about the next step.. would 'XX00.blah.co.uk' be my incoming server? In which case, would it also be my outgoing server?

Please help me, this is driving me barmy :( :(

Lou!

your site is still hosted with 123reg

show me exactly what the two "DNS servers Or something?! EXAMPLE: XX00.blah.co.uk" are I am guessing you need to go into 123reg and change the nameservers in there to go to whoever is hosting your site.... once thats propogated then you can setup email

you'll need to put your dns server details for your hosting in with who you've registered your domain with.

the domain registrar people (who you got the name from) should have a help section with a frequently asked questions you can read on this as it'll be in the top 5 queries they come across so don't feel stupid :)

if you want to pm me for any further info i'll see if i can run it through with you on msn or something if you use it.

Is your email IMAP enabled? Some of them are POP as standard unless you upgrade.

I'm with fasthosts, I simply set it up within Thunderbird as incoming mail being mail.mydomain.co.uk and outgoing being smtp.fasthosts.co.uk.

Your domain provider should have simple to follow instructions for setting up mail in applications such as Thunderbird.

According to the OP she has bought the domain with 123reg but hosting is elsewhere..

Nothing is going to work while the hosting is still with 123reg... she needs to point the domain at the new hosting before trying to access email..

Sorry but really :)

Like I said, there's nothing on the site yet, ie, it hasn't gone live (hence why it's still a 123-reg page), but the company who will be hosting it have set me up these emails. I've already put the DNS servers into 123-reg but have a feeling I've put them in the wrong bit.. blerghhhh!

PM on it's way in a few minutes.. will go and check 123-reg's FAQ quickly!

No idea if it's IMAP enabled.. what's that mean? I read up on the difference betweet IMAP & POP and picked that one because it looked better.. :bonk:

Sorry louise your missing the point.... Your email will not work while your website is still hosted with 123reg ... it doesnt matter if your new host has set them up... you need to point the domain (website AND EMAIL) to the new host for it to work

You probably have put them in the wrong place... its still showing 123reg and changes pretty quick.. how long since you put the numbers in..

It probably is pop and not imap.. but sorry to be a pain.. it still wont work.. email or webspace because your still hosted email and web.. on 123reg

Name servers:
ns.123-reg.co.uk
ns2.123-reg.co.uk

Hmm interesting..! So would I get the POP3 & SMTP settings from my host?

No... in your email client.. but the address for the email would be your new host

who is your new host?

what are the two address they gave you.. do they start with ns. ? or mail. ?

yup, your host should be able to provide you with the correct email settings. some even have autoconfigure scripts you can use per mail client :)

which are absoloutly no use to her as the domain is stil at 123 reg

step 1 point the domain (thus the email) to new hosting.

sigh :) <thats a BigsmilE>

My email has been set up by my host, I haven't set up anything via 123reg apart from the domain, so how would I point the email to the new host if it's already.. there?

I put the numbers in a couple of hours ago now I think. Where was I supposed to put them?

Are the emails @yourdomain name?
If yes then your new host has set them up dependant on you changing the nameserevers at 123reg

Your seperating email and website but shouldnt.. its all done under your domain.. your domain needs pointing to the new host.. I am guessing its the two address but i cant tell until you show them ?

I put the numbers in a couple of hours a go now I think. Where was I supposed to put them?

Then i would say almost deffo in wrong place but i wouldnt put them anywhere until i see if they are mail address or nameservers

start with ns & new host is 1and1

right

go to 123reg
MANAGE DOMAIN
CHANGE NAMESERVERS

theres 4 boxes... put the 2 ns.??? into the first two and save

if thats what you already did and they are there.... then its a waiting game... but i have done this before and it dont take that long

A bit late maybe, but wouldn't it have been easier to set up the email along with the actual domain? Most companies give you an email address with each domain anyway with the option to set up more if required.

better to have it on your own hosting IMHO and if thats with 1and1 then she is doing the right thing :) again IMHO

I've already done that so I'll just have to wait :) Thanks for your replies! :D

I am amazed its taking so long then....

Right when thats propogated your ready to setup email and it looks like your right with imap

Check here you can see nameservers are 123reg ... check again later or in morning and see if they are the two names you put in.. when they are then your ready to setup email
