We have had our domain name for 6 monthts and have it for 5 years afterwhich we get the option to either get rid of it or renew at 99p a month

Our Host has just informed me of a purchaser wanting our domain name for a 5 figure sum and the 5 means five so does www.wilkinsons-photography.com seem a good buy to you or is this a market ploy so early into our contract:shrug:

Are they asking you for further money to retain it, or offering you money to sell it? It does sound strange, as its not really the domain that generates traffic, rather the marketing and effort that goes into a website. You would guess there are plenty of similar names a possibly purchaser could come up with, and avoid a five figure sum!

Who is the host out of interest?

1+1+1+1+1=£5 sold  Seriously sound them out you never know and you can always tell them to get lost ;)

Maybe these folks want to buy up domain names that use 'wilkinson' and 'photography' together so that potential clients aren't confused (when googling) or business lost to other photographers using a similar name.
This can be good business strategy.

Whois

It could be a scam, after all why didn't the interested party contact you directly, it's not up to the host to handle the sale.

If it is genuine I'd also advise cutting out the middle man (the hosting compnay) as they might have decided to take a "finder's fee" for their trouble.

I'm not saying they have, just something worth checking ;)

When buying a domain name it's always good to make sure they are regulated by Nominet, the domain buying governing body for the UK. I think you can buy through them directly too.

Nominet only deal with .uk domains. This is a .com domain name with Tucows who are a reputable domain authority. Looking at the domain I am surprised you were not contacted directly as your details are available on the whois and not masked with a privacy system... Unless the offer came direct to you or via Tucows I would be suspicious (I Know you won't have bought it from Tucows, but they are the Registrar that was used for the original registration)

I dont even want to follow it up as there are to many scams doing the rounds at the moment ....the five figures is probably what it will cost me lol

Who is your web host? Fasthosts?

I would doubt they could be ar**ed to contact you bout something like that, so i would confirm it was actually them. As people have said, it could be a scam, and with fasthosts a large business, with, in my experience, poor tech support, i severely doubt they would be bothered to get in touch.

You are the admin contact, so they can easily find your details, and claim to be your host.
