Going soon, was wondering are there any bargains to be had?

Going to puerto plata, what should i try and get out and see? Not sure whether to take PAS or the DSLR, any thoughts?

Probably worth bearing in mind that this is a very poor country and when I was there around 8 years ago, as soon as you step out of your resort/complex/hotel, you're bang smack in the middle of a 3rd World country.

Anything of value could represent a decent meal ticket ;)

I think I'd be inclined to take my DSLR for complex use and take the P&S for out and about.

Thanks Russ,
Will just take the P&S then, means I don't have to carry as much either.

It's not quite as bad Russ would suggest... It's a developing country, but by our standards is quite poor.

Tourism is the most important business to the DR and they take your visit very seriously. Most areas have officers from a separate Tourist Police force...they can be a little overbearing sometimes moving locals on where large groups of tourists gather to make sure nothing bad happens to them.

But I've wandered through (some fairly grim parts) of Puerto Plata city centre and not felt at all threatened.

Dominicans are very friendly people on the whole, very welcoming and when you venture off into the countryside (we did a quad bikes tour off down the dust tracks) everyone we passed waved at us, even those in cars and trucks...they weren't selling anything or begging, just being friendly.

That's not to say that you won't be met with more than your fair share of people begging and selling toot to you.

It's also not to say it's some sort of crime free Idaho either...it's not crime free and you will always hear stories about people losing items of value from their hotel rooms.

So the short version of this long answer is that if only your p&s fits into the safe in your room...that's what to take!

Oh and enjoy it! Have a wonderful time!
