Domke F2 or Similar? Suggest me a bag!

Hello,

About 6 weeks ago I bought a Crumpler Muffin Top 7500, however after adding a grip and a 24-70L I've kinda run out of space in it.

I'm looking for something bigger that I can grow into, Preferably a shoulder style.

Over the coming months I hope to end up with a gripped 5D MKII, a 70-200 2.8L and either the 1.4 or 2x extender.

The bag must be able to hold the above items, the items in my sig and perhaps another speedlite, with the 24-70 L on the body.

I was looking at:

Domke F2, these seem to get great reviews, and are reasonably priced! (Maybe a bit small?) Does anyone have one?
Crumplers next one up from the Muffin Tops, not sure which it is ***.
Or perhaps a Billingham.

As its the bag I want to stay with, cost isn't a factor, and I would welcome suggestions, perhaps if you own similar gear and could show a piccy of your bag, that would be great too.

I used to have an F2 but changed earlier this year as it became too small for all my gear. What did I pick? The F1-x!

The Domke bags are simply built to last, incredibly comfortable to carry (despite the weight a full bag will bring) and don't scream "I'm full of expensive gear" to loose fingered swamp life. As you may have guessed, I really like Domke bags!

The only downside is that the canvas versions aren't waterproof, but they do a ballistic nylon version as well if you need weatherproofing.

It's worth taking a look at the Cambags website which will give you an idea of the amount of gear you can fit in (it's an awful lot!).

Domke's are pricey, but I have no doubt it is going to last me many MANY years!

Do you find the shoulder strap comfy enough when loaded?

I can't really tell from pics but I assume the innards are padded enough that your confident in the safety of your gear?
 
I personally find the strap fine, but they do make an additional pad (this one) should you want it that fits all sizes.

Internally you'll find most bags come with a four section insert for lenses, but again, you can buy differing inserts to configure the bag how you like. As shipped, I normally have a body at each end with the four section insert in the middle.

The outside edges of the bag aren't padded at all, so you aren't going to want it to roll down a hill but it's easy enough to insert some foam round the edges if you feel it's needed.

Ironically, it's the back of the back not being padded that makes it so comfortable to use in my opinion, as it moulds to your hip or back when you carry it so it doesn't rub.
 
Thanks for the input everyone, i've nabbed a 2nd hand F2 I found on ebay that should accomodate my current gear with no probs, and will be a nice road test through my gear upgrades to see about the F1-x.

I will post some shots of my stuffed Crumpler and the Domke when it arrives for comparison.

Expect to see the Crumps in Classifieds sometime soon :thumbs:
 
F2 arrived this morning, initial thoughts are good, nice and heavy-quality feel to the canvas material and and pockets, straps, seams etc all feel tough and well built. Alot more room in than my current bag.

Also slightly unsure about the best way to load the body with 24-70 attached, my worry is of sitting it in a certain way and putting stress onto the mount, hard to describe without pics.

Bit concerned about getting stuck in a random shower with it but will think more on that when its loaded, I had the same concern with the design of the Crumpler Muffin Top but I never got rained on with it anyway.

Hope to post some pics tonight with it unloaded/loaded and of the Crump to compare.
 
I really like my black billingham bag (550) big enough to fit loads of gear in, even my 300 2.8 on the body and doesn't scream camera bag at all. Lots of padding on the strap makes it nice and comfy to carry.
