Don McCullin

Mel, thanks for sharing this. I am a real fan of Don Mc Cullin's work.

He talks with great humility about his contribution to news and photography.

The real horror of conflict in some parts of the world, that he clearly still lives with, would have gone unnoticed without his photographic testimony.

It is not surprising that one of his major retrospective works is called Sleeping with ghosts!

Thanks Mel, he's a really interesting guy and much as he may not wish to be remembered as a war photographer I feel his work is a force for good and should be appreciated as that. And as much as I have admired his work over the years it's not something I could ever have done.

The Sunday Times article recently showing his photos of Syria was also rather powerful - though I have to say that the digital, colour images didn't seem as strong to me as the older B&W film stuff.

In another vein, - I've got a book of his called 'Southern Frontiers' which is just brilliant. It documents some of the Roman sites in the Middle East and North Africa in fabulous B&W.
