Hi,

I am off to Donna Nook for the first time tomorrow and wondered what you would recomend as an ideal setup. Also wondering how i can make some covers for my cameras and still be able to use the controls on the lenses

Im thinking my ideal setup will be 40d and 30d with 100-400 and 70-200. Not a good idea from what i have read to be getting anywhere near the seals, so that combo should ensure i keep my distance.

So i guess i am just looking for general advice and help on any of the above and anything else you think will help me to have an enjoyable day.

Look forward to the replies

hope the two above give you an idea of how it works. Donna Nook a few weeks ago

Ahh i see, interesting, so it looks like there is a fenced off area where the general public will mostly be but then i guess the more serious photos will venture out onto the dunes and down to the waters edge when the tide has gone out?

Looks like there is an aweful lot of people there in the above shots!!! I am hoping to be there around 7-7.30am so hopefully a bit quieter then.

just out of interest, what is Donna Nook and why all the people there.

It is (or at least used to be) a practice target range for the RAF / USAF etc.

Well, that's why I'd go there anyhow

Lol, from this website http://www.lincstrust.org.uk/reserves/nr/reserve.php?mapref=15

'The RAF Bombing Range at Donna Nook provides the seals with a relatively disturbance-free site for hauling out'

Bless 'em, i think it would disturb me though!

Seriously though, about 15 years ago, i used to spend a lot of time there watching the Aircraft go through thier exercises during weekdays.

I guess it's good for the seals and also aircraft if you're interested.

do the RAF still use the area then?

Thats handy to know, i wonder if any of the low fly shooters go there?

Kev, that link needs a login..

Any idea how often the area is used and how close to the seal area it is?

I really fancy a trip up there! i always thought it was up near Newcastle!! its so much closer..

:bonk: ditto. give us a shout if you plan a drive up there Tony.

Just for info. We have had friends staying with us this weekend who live about 2 miles from Donna Nook. They said the the seals are beginning to spread out further south due to the disturbance at DN. You can walk all along the coast there but the marshes are nature reserve/MOD property. It can be bitterly cold so wrap up and at this time of year there can be some interesting birds as well.

As soon as my shoulders up to holding the camera and big lens im going!! lol..

Do the Seals go elsewhere at different times of year?

I think we'll take MY car if thats ok Yv!! i want to e able to get home.. :naughty:

The seals will still be near the fence line. The RAF arent using the beach anywhere near as much as usual. If they think the seals are being disturbed they are likely to use Pembrey in South Wales.
Midweek is usually when the RAF use it. Last week it was Tues/Weds. If any of you are likely to be going this week, I can make it Friday probably. Could do that and then onto Coningsby for some Typhoon shots?

Kev.
