yeah yeah, I know..common sense really!

Well this guy *points thumbs at self* has OCD, and particles drive me MENTAL..but a few specs of dust have now turned into marks and more dust lol.

Camera now on its way to have the focus screen replaced properly which was a lot cheaper than I expected, and being a CPS member means it gets done quickly.

So...to anyone with dust in on the mirror or the focus screen, LEAVE it there and forget about it :)
 
I've taken mine out and washed it under the tap, it's just a piece of plastic.

madman! :) its also very soft plastic and can be marked with the softest of brushes..like mine. my problem is if you remove it, dust will get in there unless you have a cleanroom.
 
Jim's right....just a quick rinse under the tap and a blow dry is usually all it needs. I routinely change mine based on the lenses I'll be using.

is this on the 5dmkiii? surely removing those screws etc is more hasstle than its worth.

EDIT* just noticed I didnt even mention what body I am talking about haha.
 
No, on the 1Dx (and all other 1srs bodies) it's just a spring tab and the screen can be lifted out.

I've changed the screen in my 5D3 too but it's not really designed for in/out changes so it stays put.

Not all canon cameras have pop out screens.
OP, don't feel bad, you are not the only one that's done this. I gave mine a light brush and scratched it badly. I have a 6D so just ordered a new one and easy enough to change, but that speck of annoying dust cost me £30 :(
 
I have the same. Within a couple of weeks of getting my 5D3 I'd marked the focus screen. It really annoyed me as I did nothing different to the other 3 Canon bodies I've owned but this one marks simply by looking at it. Anyway, I learned to live with it until yesterday when somehow I managed to get a proper scratch on there.

I'll be going to Fixation tomorrow who will change it while I wait for £36. It's not user replaceable so I'm not going to try and do it myself. Hopefully then I'll have a nice clear viewfinder again, at long last.

That's no longer the case (sadly). Some of the current models with transmissive screens aren't secured using the simple spring tab method.

embarrasingly...this is not my first rodeo too haha.

My 5d2 I did the same but that was an easy replacement. my 1dmkiii and 1dx I have never had a problem with, they never seem to get dusty as I rarely take off the lenses. the 5d3 im always swapping between the 24-70 f2.8 and the 16-35 f2.8..maybe I should convince the missus I need another 5d3 body :P

The 5d3 are not supposed to be user replaceable. I did get the option to buy a replacement for 20ish pounds but for the sake of another 20 I would rather a pro did it in a dust free environment.
 
where are you getting that done? I think I was quoted 39 from H Lehmanns all in to get it swapped out or around 25-26 for them to just send me the part.

not something they would change under warranty anyway is it?
 
One of my previous bodies had a mark on the focus screen when I bought it, probably due to being nudged with the tip of a rocket blower I reckon.
Fortunately it was a 50D so it only took a few seconds to swap out as they're just clipped in.
 
I'm another who used to wash them under the tap, and without incident too. If you do mark it the camera will still work perfectly and if you can cope with seeing a mark through the VF it's no big deal.
 
Wish the 5D3's focus screen was interchangeable, I recently put an Ee-S in my old 5D and it's so much nicer with my primes now! I can actually confidently manual focus my 50L with that body now, hehe. It only took 20 seconds or so to do, much easier than I was expecting :)

The idea installing a cut down screen in my 5D3, however, doesn't appeal to me... too scared of messing it up! ;)
 
i don't think you need to cut up anything. the 5d2 ones don't have tabs on the sides to keep them in place..it works but not well.
 
yeah, got one of those. the problem with them if you are a bit heavy handed is you can blow dust between the focus screen and the innards..or, like me..hit the focus screen :D
 
I managed to scratch the focusing screen on my Nikon D40. I got a split one as I was so used to them, and ended up scratching it and the old one :/

Since then I'm a bit put off going near them. I'm not the most steady handed ><
