Yes, however I was one step ahead last Christmas when I bought my parents a new compact to replace their aging old one - I charged the battery beforehand so when they unwrapped it, they could use it straight away.
Although you need someone to do it before you know you have it

Yep - 4 hours to charge up the batts for the D3x's when I got them...grrrrrr
