Double viewfinder view

So this might be stupid, but I have actually never seen it before today; and thus I freaked out a bit. Basically, when looking down (as in, trying to look into the camera body) of the viewfinder, there's like a "second view" of the scene.

Of course, having not (from what I can remember) seen this in at least the last 6 years I got a bit worried, especially since I just started using new lens. So I ran down to the store, and after much showing and explaining they saw it too - but had no answer to it. So we tried a couple of other lenses on my camera, still same thing. Then we tried it on another camera body (7D) and same thing, but albeit not as clearly. Their unscientific conclusion: that's normal.

As I don't fully trust the sales person, I just want to confirm - is it totally as it should be? :)

Below is an image taken into the viewfinder to show the phenomenon. So you can see that underneath the exposure display there's a second view... (as well as a few dead pixels on my much beaten P&S :))

I've never noticed this before, but after reading your post I did the same check on my 50D, same phenomenon that you see. It's never been bashed or dropped so I would suspect that it is a normal thing. To me, the secondary image looks upside down. Perhaps a reflection from something inside the camera?

Yes, something related to the mirror I'm guessing. I just found it odd that I haven't seen it before, and the fact that it exist at all.

Just wanted to make sure it is in fact normal behaviour; and so I'm glad I'm not the only one who's got it! :)

Yeah this just made me go check too, and I see it on my Canon EF

So being the paranoid person I apparently am, I couldn't help but to make sure with Canon; and this is what they said:

With reference to your enquiry regarding the EOS 5D Mark II, please be advised that with the EOs 5D mark II and EOS 7D this is normal and expected behaviour depending on the lens used. We have achieved to recreate this issue with several lenses and we have found out that is does occur with almost every lens. PLease be advised that this does not affect the image quality.

So now I just need to stop constantly look at it, it's almost worse than the dust on my focus screen! :)

Happens on my 7D (just checked) but its way way down below the info stuff :) cant see it unless I purposely look for it.

Yeah, when we checked a 7D in the store it was less prominent than on my 5D2. It's one of those things; now that I know it's there I just see it all the time! Maybe I need look over how I actually hold / angle the camera! :D

lol when im looking through it properly, ie to take a picture, i cannot see it, only if i look down, then move the camera I can then see it

good to know canon got back to you with confirmation of it being ok

For sure, it greatly calms my fragile nerves! :)

I don't really notice under normal circumstance either, but for some reason I can't help angling the camera and look down now. It's like the old classic "Dont touch this button", and the first thing you do is touch it... :)

Anyway, I'm off to pick up my new 50 f/1.4 and then get going on my street photography project. Nothing better soothes your mood than spending some money! ;)

Just tried to replicate this with my D200 and no success. Nikon must be built better :D

I have a feeling this is easier to see on full-frame cameras, hence you not seeing it on the D200.

OK, I can see a small band of my ceiling faintly reflected when I look through at an angle so steep I can't see any of the normal view when looking straight through.

Same for me on my Canon film camera though it's easier to see in brighter conditions. I cant see it on my 450D
