I heared late last night that Doug Allan had passed away. A truly inspirational man who lived for wildlife.

Our camera club had him as a key speaker a few years ago and he was just lovely, making time to speak personally with people after his presentation. His passion for his genre was infectious and he also worked with David Attenborough on the series The Blue Planet, Blue Planet II, Planet Earth and Frozen Planet. Some of his escapades were legendary ...... 1 of them, diving through a hole in thick, Arctic ice to get footage.

After hearing his presentation that night and speaking to him afterwards, I knew from then going forwards, wildlife would be a huge part of my photography.

He will be missed in the photography and film community.

Unbelievably sad news!

Whilst Sir David Attenborough is the recognised voice of our wildlife, it was frequently Doug Allan that was behind the camera.

His footage over the past 40 years, raised the public's awareness to the plight of both our wildlife and our planet.

RIP Doug Allan

A brilliant and superbly dedicated craftsman. His work is his legacy.

Yes, David Attenbrough gets all the credit for the amazing wildlife series on BBC and the cameramen hardly get any!

incidentally does anyone else agree that DA's voiceovers are getting just a little bit predictable? All feeding, breeding and fighting? I've often thought there was more to wildlife than that. Don't get me wrong DA has had an amazing career and I'd vote for an annual "David Attenborough Day" if anyone suggested it.

Sadly, his 'voice-overs', are nowadays delivered from scripts written elsewhere by other people!

I'm sure that given the desire, ability and freedom, his commentary would be very different.

Of course, at his age, his reputation is being utilised to 'sell' the directors message.

Thank god we still have him with us!

The wife and I attended a talk by Doug Allan a few years back, had a good chat with him afterwards (all Dunfermline folk together). A thoroughly nice bloke.

I still have some equipment bought in his father's camera shop. Morriss Allan was a well respected photographer and cinematographer round these parts. Some of his work is held in the Scottish Film Archive.

Some years ago, Doug Allan gave a talk at the Cheltenham Science Festival about his work with David Attenborough. The talk was excellent along with his excellent images. It was clear that the Attenborough series is teamwork and all members contribute. I am sure Attenborough's role is not just a front man. Despite his age, I believe he influences the policy and is highly respected and influences Governments though obviously not Trump.

That would be my feeling too. I can't imagine he's just a front man, even at his age.
