Down sizing or Nikon to Sony

I have at the moment a d300 18-200 vr II 50 1.8 Sigma 18-50 2.8 and a sb 900 flash.

I have recently bought a nex 5.

Should i keep what i have or move over to sony and buy an adaptor to share lenses with the nex?

Other option is to sell d300 and buy one of nikons lesser dslr or buy a nikon to nex adaptor.

Not really sure what i ould like to do as rarely use the d300.

Just gone from a D700 with 20,50&105mm primes to a NEX-5 and 16mm.

My original plan was to reuse the 50 & 105 with the Lensbaby Tilt Transformer but the size of the combiniation has put me off.

So, am now selling the lot and waiting for the Zeiss 24mm lens this year and getting the mid tele or macro next...

Something as small as the NEX is easily portable and I didn't want to be bogged down with big glass just for the sake of it.

Going through a personal clearout ATM - so probably different perspective from you :wave:!
 
When was the last time you used the D300 and what for?
 
Last time i used the d300 was for a model for some profile pictures.

I find it bulky for carrying around so often i just dont bother hence the nex.

I have already had a clear out of some of my gear and wondering if its worth keeping the rest.
 
I've just gone through the same as you. I had a D3s and loads of gear, sold it all partly to fund my house extension, partly to pay off some credit cards, and got a GF-1.

Couldnt get on with the GF-1 so decided to buy the minolta dynax 7d from here. A great camera, if it worked properly (but thats another story - seller decided to sell dodgy camera and then deny all knowledge, even though he's never used the camera lens combination he sold).

So the point of the story is that I missed the DSLR and a fast lens. Dont know if that helps.

With your reasoning I would probably sell the D300 and buy the adapter rather than a Nikon smaller DSLR.

only thing is the d300 is very good i think i would probably regret it.
 
I totally agree that the d300 is great but if you aren't using it what is there to regret?
 
I was in a similar position to you, sold a D300, 70-200vr, 16-85vr and 70-300vr to buy a GF1 with 14-45 and a samsung compact superzoom.
My reasoning was that I didnt enjoy taking all the Nikon gear out on day trips and holidays. It got in the way, every trip was a photo trip instead of a holiday.

I soon sold the Samsung because it just couldnt cut it.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I ended up buying a Leica X1 and some Micro 4/3rds gear.

The Leica is superb and goes everywhere with me. I enjoy using it, even though it has a fixed lens and not the quickest AF.

Unfortunately, the IQ of the Leica showed the M43 gear up and I used it less and less and started to miss a long zoom and the IQ of my D300.

So, not being able to afford another D300, I bought a used D200 and a couple of lenses, one being an 80-200 f2.8 ( this is what I really missed)

It was a long expensive process, it would have been cheaper keeping all my Nikon kit then buying the Leica!

So, think very carefully about selling the D300. You are going to miss it, but only you can tell how much. Switching to a lesser Nikon may be the best idea. I love my D200, its almost as good as the D300 was and using the Leica made me realise that I just really need basic settings with cameras. I never used all the D300 had to offer.
Dont underestimate the quality of the older Nikons though. I got a request a while ago from Getty to licence some of the images I took with a D50! They didnt want my D300 stuff!

Put a different way, what are the economics of keeping it vs selling it and changing over. Think of each change over as a tax. You're going to loose some money in each deal unless you find very good deals and work with used gear. How much depends on when you sell. Selling the D300 now would get you more money than when the D400 comes out. How much will the used price of a 300 drop when the 400 comes out? Who knows. Will you sell the 300 eventually? If so then sell it now while it holds the most value.
