I like to keep my camera handy for most occasions, and so found myself lugging round larger and larger bags, for that just in case moment.
My biggest blocker for getting a much smaller bag, a Canon 100EG Deluxe was the size of my flashes. Any of my flashes took the space of two or more lenses, a ringflash or a Neewer NW-670.
Getting my minimum gear in that bag seemed impossible till I found the loveliest little flash on the market, a Viltrox Speedlight JY610T. This is a great little flash, a kinda copy of the Canon speedlite 270ex but bought from the 'tinterweb at around £20!
Extra bonus on space saving is it only takes two AA cells, so I can stick my USB charger in there as well.
