Downloading from camera

I've just come across an issue I don't recall seeing before, I mostly remove my cards and use a card reader then copy my files off the card. (RAW and large JPEG) Recently I decided to start downloading straight from the camera after seeing so many bent pin issues with cards. So I plug the camera in, switch it on, Windows sees it as a drive, select all my files, copy to a folder on my laptop and done...... now the bit that I don't get, I would now expect to see the RAW and JPEG files in the folder on my laptop, what I actually seem to have is two copies of the JPEG titled DSC_5449 and DSC_5449(1) all the way through to DSC_5471 and DSC_5471(23) in this particular instance. Any ideas where I've messed this up?
 
As a side note, is it better to take the card out to transfer or should one just use the USB cable and download from Camera?
 
If you look at the file extension, you'll see one is jpg the other is the RAW extension CR2 or NEF. The camera doesn't differentiate with the sequence numbers so they both have the same number, but the computer has to identify them differently so hence the (1). You can sort them out by sorting by extension. This will group all your JPEGs together and your RAWs separately.

You could just simply shoot RAW unless you have an overriding reason to shoot both.

As an answer to Koolpc's question, I would suggest using a card reader when possible. I think it is a more reliable way to download the images.Plus it doesn't drain the cameras battery. It's also more convenient with multiple cards
 
Probably one that fits into an old floppy port at the front of the pc then?
 
I expected them to have both file extensions but they don't... they're both identical sizes and file extensions, I guess I'll just use a card reader.....
 
I always download using the USB cable.

I could be worrying about nothing but I don't like the idea of continually swapping the card from camera to reader and back.

I have heard that using the USB cable drains the camera battery. I don't know if I would get more photos per battery if I used a reader, but I tend to transfer the photos everyday by the cable and at the moment I'm getting about 350 to 400 shots from a full battery.
