Hi Folks

At some point during the year I will be upgrading to FF for the first time. Not only that but it also looks likely that I will be jumping ship from Nikon over to Canon after being wooed by the 5D Mkii.

It is unlikely at the moment that I will be upgrading to CS5 and instead stay with my present CS3.

What I would like to know is two things;

1) Are there any major differences between DPP and Adobe Camera RAW? Is one just as good as the other or does ACR have the edge? and
2) Once adjustments have been made in DPP can I 'Save As' a 16 Bit TIFF file like I presently can in ACR in CS3?

The choice I have is use DPP or get the DNG Converter.

Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

ACR is better, offers finer control over RAW file conversion.

DPP can save 16-bit tiffs, as well as 8-bit.

ACR has some great features that aren't available in DPP but my pictures always look better with DPP so I have stuck with that.
 
I'd say use DPP - it comes with the camera and is dedicated to dealing with Canon raw files. There are a few advantages like the picture settings in camera being recognized in DPP and you can retain or alter them, but the main reason for me is that it gives the best noise performance you're likely to get from Canon raw files.

DPP may seem very basic compared to say Lightroom, but it's all I use and I'm very happy with it.

Yes - you can save or export files as 8 bit or 16 bit.

But as squishy says, JPEGs only right? Not TIFFs. I never go anywhere near JPEGs.

No, that was a typo. I meant TIFF.

DPP can save both 8 and 16bit tiff's as well and jpgs
 
DPP gives me MUCH cleaner high iso conversions than ACR/CS3, but then it would as it's designed specifically for Canon raw conversion!
 
Manny thanks for the feedback. Good to see the TIFF option (thanks squishy). My RAW workflow is usually quite minimal...

Adjust exposure
Adjust WB
Adjust saturation
Adjust clarity
Adjust contrast

Noise shouldn't be an issue as I'll be using Nik Dfine 2.0. I suspect I'll use both DPP & ACR tbh and see how it pans out.
