I think it's a fair review. They're not head-over-heels in love, but give it a solid score and I would agree on most of the cons they point out.

Great camera that it is, I still think it's sluggish on AF side in dim lighting. I do wish it had IS, especially for video. At this price you would expect it, but Fuji say No!

And the battery indicator, well, that is just appalling. Shows almost full, suddenly changes to red and within seconds dead. They really need to fix this in a firmware update, soon!

Otherwise I'd also give it an 8/10. It's possibly the best camera I've used for handling higher ISO noise. It's as good if not better by a smidgen, than the D800.

Canon/Nikon knows you insert a new battery with battery ID, so they write a log file of battery percentage instead of reading voltages.

X100(s) only have 2 terminals in its battery compartment, so it won't know it's a new battery or the old battery on starting up. So it's highly unlikely a software trick can solve this.


Does X100S do focus peaking on playback? I always use OVF, so focus peaking and the like are useless, but it would be nice to be able to quickly check focus on playback or even better, during the 1.5s instant playback.


Apart from the random focus oddities (which I believe focus peaking during instant playback will help greatly), I love my X100. Took photos at night ISO 6400 and they all look great. Shutter speed can down to 1/10s because there's no mirror slap.

I'm talking a battery that was full, and read as so, going in. When it's half empty, you can see on the battery display, but it stays same until exhausted then you get the red warning for a few seconds before it dies. There is no in between from half empty to drained.

Inserting a new battery will then again display as full.

Not sure on the peaking on preview, as I never use it.

Oh right, I'm talking about when the camera goes to sleep with half-full battery, then on waking, it reads the battery voltage and assumes it's full. After a few shots it goes to red and soon dies because the voltage in the drained battery drops very very quickly under use. There needs to be some kind of memory, but impossible with just 2 terminals.

For what you are saying, it's simple, just adjust the red voltage threshold a bit.

I wish they would.

I have 3 batteries for mine, so I don't get caught out much. It can happen that you get red suddenly when shooting and may miss a few shots changing battery. But, in that case, I pity anyone with just the one.
