Three dragonfly shots of two different dragonflies. My goodness these are hard to ID correctly, so would really welcome your thoughts on my ID's. Perhaps I've got them all wrong  Taken in Spain in my garden.

1) Female Violet dropwing close up

2) The full body shot that helped with the ID

3) I have ID'd this as a Common Darter, based on the black area on the frons and then the markings from there.

#1 & #2 are definately Violet dropwings.

#3 isn't a Common Darter, because of the light grey eyes (they are yellow in the Common Darter). I will look into the ID and get back to you.

For #3 you really need a photo of the full body to get a positive ID.

It 'could' be a Common Darter - the eyes are not yellow as stated above. They are usually brown on the top half and can be yellowy on the lower half, this can vary if they are immature.

Cheers Linda. I am strarting out in the ID of dragonflies and I know that I must take a few catalogue and ID shots in order to get it correct. I am working on trying to ID these damn things, they're not so easy to work out as butterflies!!

Have got a pic of a male violet dropwing this evening - That was easy to ID!!!!
