I'm assuming it's a Dragonfly. I'm sure someone viewing the forum will name this for me.
I was very surprised to come accross this last weekend whilst out on a little wander around our local country park.

Certainly is a dragonfly. I think it's a male broad bodied chaser. The tell tales are the yellow/brown marks down the abdomen and the big dark patches at the wing roots. No doubt there was water not too far away? Unlike some dragons that seem to be constantly on the move chasers do tend to perch. British dragonflies, the British Dragonfly Society website, is quite good for ID.

You are correct this one perched about 1ft above the water. There is no way I would have gotten this photo otherwise.
