Hi thinking about buying a 80-200 2.8l.Can't afford 70-200is 2.8L and was going to settle for f4.Main use football some wildlife and general. How would this lens perform?

If sport is an area of interest I'd head for the fastest lens. The magic drainpipe has a fantastic reputation - if you get one in half-decent condition I'm sure you'll love the results.

I'd pass on it. It is pain to focus with it, very slow and noisy (not even that accurate with non-1D). It is too slow for sports. When it gets it right, it looks very good (minus purple fringing and flare). It also weighs a tone (very frontheavy), but in a few days you can get used to that.

I am much happier with F/4.
