Hi,

At the end of a days shooting tonight I set up for one more shot and set a long exposure going only for the tripod to fall forward and my camera to hit the deck.

I've looked at the camera and it seems fine, the lens has a small bit of plastic broken off the thread at the front but apart from that all seems well.

However, does anyone have any quick and easy checks to make sure nothing has been damaged internally or to the lens that I can't see?

I've taken a few shots and it seems ok but should I do some test shots on white paper etc???

Test shots on white paper are only for dust. If you see no difference now then I wouldn't go looking for ways to spend even more money. Let the problem find you, that way your not thinking about it the whole time.

Andy has good advise, If something surfaces at a later date the manufacturers repair outlets can replace pretty much any part. All this though is relative as to how much you want to spend and the value of the camera. I would notify your insurance company that there has been a mishap then carry on with life

Sounds like you have been very lucky And if the impact was not great enough to cause brken glass i would say your alright.
But i would go through some general checks just as if you where buying a second hand camera off some one who didn't know too much about it.

Do the shutter speeds seem correct when going up and back down
Does the apeture on the lens change when required
Does the zoom and focus feel smooth
Does the sound of the mirror seem right
Does the integral flash work

You cant account for every thing without having it checked and even then they might not detect a crack in the circuit board waitnig to catch you unawares

Take some photos - if they're OK and it's not rattling too much then it's OK - cosmetic damage makes it look like a 'proper' photographer's camera...

Thanks for al your advice, I've done some basic tests and all seems ok so I think I'll chalk it down to luck and just carry on, hoping that nothing comes back at a later date...
