Yes
Hey there, so this morning i was woke up by my wife at 4am as there were foxes playing outside, in my half asleep still drunken stumble to get my camera i knocked my 70-300 telephoto lens off the couch. OUCH

It still works but the IS makes a god awful racket now.

It's still under guarantee, bought it a few months ago. If I send it back just saying its broke will they replace/fix it or will they know I dropped it and refuse?

You might get away with it, but does it matter? You've still got to get it repaired anyway. What about your house insurance - can you not claim on that?

What do you mean by does it matter? If I have to get it repaired then it will cost me but the guarantee option will be free.

My home insurance doesn't have accidental cover

Yes I know but surely you have to get it repaired one way or another, so send it in. I'm sure they'll advise you if they're going to charge you. If you aren't prepared to pay then just put up with a broken lens!

oh I see what you mean.

It's worth a try and if I get it for free then bonus, if not I would need to pay anyhow.

The other option is I was thinking about adding accidental damage on my house insurance anyway so I could add it then in a couple of months claim for my lens

hmmm, now i'm not even sure it's broke, doesn't sound as loud now than it did at 4am this morning. I know its always made a noise when the IS kicks in but I cant decide if its any louder.

Anyone have this canon 70-300 IS lens and can comment on the IS making a noise?

Depending on the cover your home insurance offers it may already be covered. Have a read of the your insurance policy to find out.

Wouldn't that be considered fraud? :exit:

I don't think it would be worth committing fraud to save a few quid, you could end up in lot of trouble and no insurer would ever touch you again...

I've realised now it definitely has always been this loud, so it's either always been broke or it's supposed to be this loud. I have some video I took with the lens attached and the IS switched on and can hear it in the video, it's normally my ears are at the opposite end so don't hear it as much, it's only when I deleberately listen to it now I've noticed it. It still works exactly the same as before so don't worry I don't need to defraud canon, lol.

Now to find someone else with this lens and check how much noise theirs makes to decide if it's just standard or if it has always been broke

If there are no marks on the outside....My advice would be to try the Canon warranty first. Since its not apparently damaged by impact it might just be a displaced motor. which I have no doubt they will repair under warranty and could easily have happened in luggage on an aircraft.. "normal use" consists of transporting and that must inevitably have some minor "impacts" that should not affect performance....
However, dont even think about claiming "in a few months" Thats just crazy.... and its fraud...:nono:
I agree with the others... what it costs is nothing compared to a conviction for insurance fraud.:cuckoo:
We dont want to have to send you a file with a cake in it....

thank we11ingon, but if you read my last two posts I don't think the lens is broken at all now and don't need to do anything now :-)

Answer to you question ...
