hi guys my company is looking to invest in a dslr for taking photos of small manufactured parts and also being able to adapt it to the leica microscopes we have, what would you suggest?

They are looking for a relatively cheap camera no more than 550ish?? plus an adapter for that camera to the microscope view port not eye piece.

Is there a specialised company that deals with both DSLR sales and adapters?

Many Thanks

Ben

In terms of "optical quality", pretty much any DSLR will do. What you will need to check is whether the dslr can be used in a tethered mode where the required exposure info is sent via usb from the computer to the camera. It will make things a lot easier!

With regards to adapters, it's worth talking to the Leica rep for your microscope and seeing what's available. Most modern microscopes use an infinity corrected design where the lightpath after the objective is parallel, requiring a lens of some sort before the camera to generate a real image. Hence, the simple t-mount adapters used in telescope applications will be useless on their own.

ok, does anyone have any ideas on where to buy this sort of stuff? as quite desperate to get this sorted now?

Yes, Leica.

I used to sell these when I worked for a rival company and honestly the best thing to do it to give Leica a call. They will be able to match your microscope with the right mount. You need a trinocular head and a cmount that is parfocal or has a focus adjustment on it as well as the camera. The other thing to bear in mind is what you want to do with the output from the camera. Ar you happy to take a card out and download it or do you want it hard wired to a PC so you can frame grab. Do you need any specific measuring software or 3D stacking applications if you are using high mag objectives with limited DOF?

Contact your Leica rep is the best advice.

Hi Ali, taking the card out is not a problem. Photos are taken to only to show small details at a low magnification.

I wonder how much leica will set us back for an adapter!? I'll give them a call
