Hi,

Been a while since i last looked at getting a camera and i got talked out of it. On the look out again, was thinking the technology that was out there a 1-2 years a go is it still relivent for a beginner, i think it was the nikon d50 that i was tempted at getting cant see any on sale now but is something like that as usefull to a beginner as the newer cameras out there.

As i have started a couse in photography i think its time to get one. and to give me more options than my bridge camera. Although i like nikon im sure i can be tempted to other brands. Whats the second hand market like for these kind of things, as price is a big thing at the moment I dont want to be spending shed loads of money on thngs i dont need but again i dont want to go with teh cheepest if its crap,

any websites or tips greatly appreciated

The question is what do you want to do with it?
What can you not do with what you have now?
If you want to change lens what kind of photography do you do this will tell you what lens you need.
Canon has the biggest range of lens and there are a lot of S/H's about due to the new ones coming out.

TBH i dont really know what i want to do with it. I like the stuff MK does with the long exposures with water and that which i cant get away with at the moment and id like to try some IR stuff again which needs longer shuterspeeds than i can achive at the moment.

IR tends to be easier with film as the sensor has an IR filter on it, so you either get near IR or spend a bomb on getting it stripped down and the filter removed

So are you thinking landscapes, and do you have an idea on budget ? Newer bodies are more important now than they were in film but its often better to get an older semi pro body as opposed to a newer entry level body

I don't know where a d50 sits as I'm a canon man sorry

The D50 is a very capable camera, IMO it's more useful that the D40 or D60 because it has the AF motor in the body so you're not limited to AFs lenses if you want AF like you are with the D40/60.

The biggest improvement with the newer bodies is sensor improvements in handling low light, if you're not going to be shooting in low light or don't mind using flash you may as well go for a D50

Yeah the IR i was planning on just getting a filter and going near IR yeah landscapes and that.
So what would be your canon recomendation? seen some for £300 with a lens dont really want to go more that about £400 with a kit lens
