I've recently been looking at hand straps but I don't know which one to go for. Can anyone recommend a good one to get? Last thing I want to do is get a cheap one that isn't any good and my camera and/or lens get damaged. Or does it even matter if I get a generic one or branded? Any experiences would also be welcome. Thank you people.

I did try one but just couldn't get on with it,might be worth trying one first if you can lend one of somebody :)

Hi Graham

I have a Canon one for my body and it's okay, does take a little bit of getting used to and with my hand strap you have to remove the neck strap from the little loop on the camera body as this is one of the points it connects to - so not very easy to swap between the 2. I found it can help with holding the camera, but because of it's nature, it does restrict your right hand movement

I have seen one that uses the quick release connectors of a neck strap - so you can easily release one and use the other (hope that makes sense)

I currently use a hand-strap and have it set up so I can also use my Blackrapid without removing it.

I do like hand straps and am considering buying "the Clutch" by Peak Design which I think will be a marked improvement on my current one

Worth a look I think.

Thanks mate, I think I need to find one that can be easily swapped with a neck strap. It's only really for my wedding work, as a way to having my camera right in my hand. But when I'm not doing weddings the neck strap would be absolutely fine.

I've just been checking out the clutch hand strap by peak design. That looks perfect. Had some really positive reviews and it looks great too. Thank you for putting me onto that.
 
I have the cuff and leash from Peak Design and am very impressed

The quick release system is sturdy and very easy to use

I have two clips (one either side) on my D7100 and one on my LX100 so the cuff is easily transferable between the two

The cuff is excellent and although I like the neck strap (which i tend to use more of a shoulder / across the body strap as opposed to the traditional round the neck) it is a tad thin and can dig in if worn over a period of time loaded up with heavy glass :D

EDIT : Cuff, not Clutch !

I use a Peak Design cuff wrist strap which is light and easy to use as you just clip the camera on and off the cuff when you need it. I used to have one of the ones that fits over your hand but they can get hot and are unnecessarily cumbersome and fiddly to get on and off, the cuff is a breeze. I have the camera in the bag with the connector attached and can clip it onto the cuff before I take it out, same, in reverse, putting it back.

I can't imagine why any body would want anything more complicated, maybe a larger camera could be a problem although as long as you're using it for security and not support it shouldn't be. I have a Canon 70D usually with a 24-105 as a walk around and have no problems.

Not sure if you're after a hand strap where your whole hand is attached to the camera body in a shooting position or a wrist strap. If the latter then I like the Optech wrist strap which can also share connectors with the neck straps. It's a quick release and as long as the lens isn'yt too heavy you can 'dangle' the camera to use your hand for something else whereas with the hand strap you've got to take the camera off your hand to do anything even minor.

Me too.

I use it with the optech utility sling strap.

You can use them independently secured by having the sling fastened into the base, or tripod foot (via a loop screw) & the wrist strap fastened via the eyelet on the side of the camera, if you wanted to.

Bought the peak designs clutch and the slide, have the camera configured so I can used the slide if a strap is required, as it's quick enough to put on or take off. The clutch is really comfortable, easy to adjust and works brilliantly. I've been getting a little back pain carry the camera on my shoulder after a few hours of walking about. Been carrying it with just the clutch with no issues at all.
 
Optech wrist strap for me also, nice thick neoprene and comfy.
 
I have the canon hand grip black rapid sport sling waiting for fusion plate to bring it together better.

If you use Nikon then i really don't think you can beat the official Nikon Hand Strap (Nikon AH-4) as it comes with a very hand security strap so once it's in place it's pretty much impossible to drop, it also comes with it's own Arca Swiss mounting plate, which is very handy if you use Arca Swiss style Tripod Mounts as you don't have to remove it to mount it to a tripod

I wouldn't be without mine now, and i love the added feel of security i get with it, both in and around busy street enviroments, and even hanging it over the edges of cliffs, walkways etc
 
I think I'm either going to go with the clutch or the nikon hand strap. Closely followed by the peak design leash. There's so many different options.

I had the same, seeing cheaper options on amazon and other such places but I don't think I'd trust hanging my gear from it.

Peak designs clutch that I have fits onto an arca plate at the bottom with a button on a string that clips into a holder at the bottom of the hand strap. The top is a loop of material that clips into a sort of flat carabiner, Loop it through the camera strap mount and clip in. About 20 secs to remove /fit if needed.

I leave mine on, have extra connectors to add a shoulder strap if required.

I must say that Peak Designs system does look really nice, i spent ages trying to find the perfect system for me where i didn't have big bulky connectors all over my camera, i think if/when my current setup starts to get tired i might invest in that
 
I have the Peak Designs Slide and Clutch, great combo IMO. Feels really nice, really quick to attach / detach and the Capture Pro plate is also a quick release plate for my tripod.
