DSLR image to PC

Hello. I saw on a TV program that someone had there DSLR linked up to there laptop via data cable and when they took a photo it appeared on the laptop instantly. How is this done?

There are programs available for different cameras. If you Google for 'tethered shooting' you'll get some idea what's available.

Will I need a memory card in my camera? Im currently waiting for a memory card to be delivered and im wanting to try out my new camera hence why I asked about tethering photos

Not sure with 400D, with 5D you have to change a setting in menu to allow the camera to work without.

Im trying to find out how to take shots and they appear in corel after shot pro (I just got a free tial )

I linked both my 7D and 5D2 up to my computer and took photos without the card in the cameras. I was changing name data in the cameras when I tried it for a mess about.

I downloaded adobe Lightroom 3 which is so simple to use I downloaded the corel aftershot and I couldn't work out how to link the camera. (probably just me being a noob).

You don't need a card in the camera as it save to a folder in "my pictures" and no need to change any settings for it to work.
