Thinking of changing from a DSLR (D7000) to XE-1. Would like something light for travelling. Any one with issues with the downgrade??

Usually take street shots, macros and landscapes...
 
If budget constraints allow it, I would (and have) run a high end compact (in my case, 2 and a bridge) alongside the DSLR.

While I love using (and especially carrying) the smaller cameras, I do miss some features that the DSLR offers that the others don't. Top of these would be the longer exposures and smaller apertures but the wider angles I have covered in the SLR bag would be a huge loss as well.
 
To be clear, the XE-1 isn't really a compact, it's a CSC - a compact SYSTEM camera, so a step up from the Fuji compacts. Once you add a couple of extra lenses, it ceases to be as portable and convenient as a true compact, whose great advantage is the all-in-one package.
 
Edit: thought the XE-1 was the fixed lens one?

It's actually more expensive than the D7000 with just the kit lens. So budget isn't a factor? You can add a couple of small primes and maybe a macro and still keep it light and tidy I guess.

Cagey, it gets a little confusing! The XE-1 is a CSC body and uses Fuji's XF lens system. The XF-1 is a fixed zoom compact which shares its guts with the X-10 but in a different body behind a different lens. I have both the true compacts having rejected the CSC avenue as being too bulky.

TBH, if I was in the market for a CSC body, as a Nikon user (and owner of several F-mount lenses), I would be looking at a 1 series body and the lens adaptor to allow the use of F mounts.
 
AH yes, it's the XF-1 I was thinking of. They sure do make it confusing! I had the X-10 myself for a bit, or rather I bought it for the better half. She just found it a little too bulky to be an always carry compact so we changed for an RX100.

So many compacts and CSC bodies on the go these days it's hard keep up!
 
Am thinking of using my to kina 11-16 (with adaptor) until the 10-24 is out... Good to know that its a safe move :) have quite a few friends who changed as well..

Just a note of caution. It seems the lenses are highly suitable to the bodies.

People are getting good results using adapters but IMO to get the best out of the sensor you really want to use Fuji's lenses. Wouldn't expect the 10-24 to be out for a while.
 
the xe-1 isn't particularly compact either, but a lovely camera i'm very temped myself.

If the compactness is a big factor in your decision i would consider the nex6 too. It shares the same awesome EVF with the x-e1, and shares its 16mp sensor with the d7000 you already own, but with its collapsible kit lens its considerable smaller than the x-e1.

Yeah but you're are usually shooting a 5d and L glass.

And compared to the XE-1, the XF-1 is truly compact! Stuff the bag! (What bag? The XF-1 sits in a shirt pocket!) OK, it's only a 4x zoom (25-100mm, 35mm eq) but it delivers pretty amazing results for such a compact package. In a bling viewing, SOOC images from it and the X-10 came out very even and once printed to A4, the XF's image is (IMO) better. (I have and use both so have no axe to grind.) I'll be keeping both since they are different animals to use, although results from both are excellent.

There are plenty of cameras that fit in a shirt pocket but this thread is about switching from a DSLR to an XE-1 ;)

Yes it is, but if his reasoning is for the size, he might be surprised of the size of the x-e1 compared to other csc's.

I must admit the only CSC's I've used are the X-pro1, XE-1 and OM-D (which I found a bit fiddly at first) are the others much smaller?

Well they are the 3 largest you've just mentioned. I know the fuji kit lens is faster which adds to the size but even the primes are not small. Did you you click the link above comparing the nex6 and x-e1 with there kit lenses?
 
Depends what lenses you use with the Nex though - the compact kit lens and the 16mm pancake are nice and small - the other lenses not so much.

(Although the 2 £99 Sigma lenses are fairly compact, they are not pancake lens compact, the prime lenses like the 50mm 1.8 and upcoming 35mm 1.8 are the same size as the older 18-55 kit lens).

Nex is still probably the smallest csc with an APS-C sensor (I think - could be wrong) when you just look at the size of the body only.

The Fuji X forum on Serious Compacts has lots of XE-1 sample images and owner opinions, so that may be worth a read?

Well there both with there kit lenses, but yes i take your point. I was just pointing out its not the smallest csc, but i'm sure the op's done his homework.

I've gone lightweight but don't need (or have!) telephoto

Fuji X100 445g
Fuji WCL-X100 wide angle 150g
Fuji Hood and Filter Holder plus Hoya ND8, ND400 filters 105g including protective cases
Giotto's GTMT8223-50 Tripod 1100kg
3 spare batteries 106g

Total 1.906kg including the Tripod!!!!

Haven't taken my Canon 40D out of the house since getting the Fuji.
