Dual cards/split save question

D300s has CF & SD slots and allows for saving 1 format on 1 card and another on the other. I have just spotted a 32gb class 10 SD card (20MB/s) for under £40 which seems cheap compared to similar capacity CF cards. I currently have an 8gb CF (60MB/s) plugged in and also a 4gb SD in case of overspill but am considering this 32G and changing the camera settings to save the raw to SD and JPG to CF - any buffering issues doing this with the different speed ratings (or any other potential issues)? Cheers.

Silly question or in the wrong section............?:help:

I do that on my D3 without issues, but I'm not a machine gunner!

If RAW is your preferred file format, why are you only saving your backup card as jpeg? If your RAW card corrupts, you will have compromised quality, particularly if you haven't nailed the exposure or white balance in camera, (and most likely prolonged your workflow) if you are only left with jpegs to work with.

I started shoothing RAW in one slot and jpeg in the other but decided it makes more sense to save the ultimate quality on BOTH cards, so if one card lets you down, you still have exactly the same quality on the other.

If I really need jpegs as well as RAW, out of camera (I don't), I would buy bigger cards and save BOTH formats to BOTH cards.

I can't comment on buffering issues as I never seem to fill the buffer :)

I see what you are saying but at the moment JPEG is my preffered format as card is handed over after shooting so WYSIWYG. My requirement for raw is if I manage an 'outstanding' capture and wish to edit then I have the raw data on which to do the processing. Ideally hi-speed x1 64gb SD and x1 64 CF loaded in and as you say, both format files to both cards but my purchase decision is price based - 64gb CF cards are more than triple this deal but I shall bear this backup workflow in mind if I solo at a wedding. Thanks.

How do other togs save their files?

I just wouldn't ever use a 32gb card. Far too many images to loose. I use two 8gb
60mb/s Extreme cards in the D3s.
