Dual mics on D7000

I use a lapel mic for interviews but increasingly I'm shooting winners interviews, so two people speaking. So far I've either bodged it with the lapel mic going between speakers, or using a directional muc. But when people face away from camera, the sound can suffer.

I'm thinking that two lapel mics joined with a splitter and then going into the D7000's single audio input will work - anyone tried it and are there any pitfalls?
 
Yep I bought a 4 input mono mixer from maplins which works well. Only issue with d7000 is working out the gain control as it doesnt have headphone socket so i used to record to a separate recorder instead (zoom h1), sync the audio back in post.
 
Just a quick note on the mixer actually...might be a good idea to.try and find one with signal LEDs so you can monitor it for best levelling...

I don't know any to suggest but a quick google or someone else may know of one / better alternative?
 
yes thats the one i got. it has a clipping indicator on it but i use the zoom h1 with it i can monitor the signal with that (and headphones). Now that I use a D800 I can send the audio straight to the camera and monitor from there too.
 
Cheers for the advice guys but I need to keep kit down to a minimum, as I'm on the move a lot and need to travel light. A separate mixer thingumajig would be good but it'll mean I need to hire a packhorse to carry my ever-increasing kit around :lol:
