Dual Monitor set up, advantages, and is my old monitor good enough?

I currently have a 21" IMac, and have been thinking about dual screen. My old monitor from my PC days is a 19" Samsung Syncmaster monitor (this one http://www.trustedreviews.com/monit...amsung-SyncMaster-205BW-Widescreen-Monitor/p1 )

Firstly, what advantages would I gain from using 2 monitors? Having never used it, I just wondered what I am missing out on by not doing it?

Secondly would my Samsung monitor be up to the job?

I have an Xrite calbrator, so calibrating both monitors would be easy enough.

So should I give it a shot?
 
I'd say yes! I used to run my pc on 2 21" screens and it's great to be able to see all your apps fullscreen at once. Since getting a 27"iMac i haven't bothered though. I have enough screen now.

But try it, the worst that can happen is you don't like it and take it away :)

I think the question is more why shouldn't you?

Try it, if you like it, stick with it, if you don't, don't. :)

Personally I run a pair of 24" HP LP2475w monitors calibrated with the Eye One Display 2, and love it.
 
I used to use just one but now I would not go back to that. Lets say you use Photoshop. You can have all your pallets on one screen and your image opened on the other. You can have bridge or lightroom opened in its own window whilst you work on Ps.

You can browse the web on one whilst working ion word on the other etc etc etc
 
It gets addictive... the first time I found out Windows 98 supported multiple monitors, I whacked four PCI graphics cards into my system, and had 5 monitors and a TV running out of it, just to have a play. :D

Then there was the 5 monitor system I built up a few years ago purely for playing GLQuake and Unreal Tournament with some nice peripheral vision.

Now I just wish I could fit a third LP2475w on my desk to try some triple-head World of Warcraft. ;)
 
i cant imagine working on one screen. it would make me feel sick. i have 3 screens. advantages are obvious, you can see more stuff at the same time
 
i started working on 2 screens at work in an IT support environment.

working at home on a single screen for image processing is now so uncomfortable. its so much nicer not having to alt+tab between apps etc
