Dual monitor set up

I realise this is a fairly basic question but does anyone use Lightroom 3 with 2 monitors?

I have a 2nd 22" Dell monitor unused at the moment and wonder if I could use it to good effect for greater editing "space"

I have a new Dell Desktop with windows 7 so the set up is straightforward but there is one HDMI output and one traditional VGA so I'm concerned there will be different signals and thus pictures going to each screen or am I talking rubbish?
 
My PC has dual output with VGA and DVI connectors, which I feed to 2 VGA monitors using a DVI-VGA adaptor for one.

In Windows go to display properties and it should allow you to enable the second monitor, they can have different resolutions and refresh rates.

In Lightroom just select the Secondary Display and enable it - works a treat:thumbs:
 
The signal should not be an issue. I cannot work on a single monitor now as I have one monitor showing a grid and the other showing a single image of the selected picture.
 
i dont think you can use HDMI and another output at the same time, something to do with the encryptopn HDMI uses.

also youll notice how cruddy the analogue VGA screen looks when running it along side a digital screen running from DVI or HDMI..
 
I also use duel monitors, great for photoshop as all of the tools are on the second screen leaving the main screen just to hold the image.
 
im a dual monitor user. rarely use my laptop as my main pc at home has two screens and find it tough. even managed to convince work to let me have a dual monitor setup.. told them it would increase my productivity.... :)

At home i have two graphics cards both outputting HDMI at its luuuuurvly... :) Tried three screens for a while, and that was just manic....!

Yes. Just connect the two up and click screen no 2 in the bottom left hand corner and you get the ability to display the image(s) selected in a number of ways.

HDMI only uses encryption when the source material requests it (i.e. BluRays). You need HDCP (the encryption) to playback BR material out of a PC using the "standard" product offerings like PowerDVD. This has nothing to do with the ability to display non encrypted material (i.e. everything but BluRay) on 2 monitors.

Yes, I know you can get around the BR encryption, but that isn't the point ;)
 
This is all very exciting....Sent up 2nd monitor and it's fantastic :-)

Have the main HP monitor on HDMI still and connected the Dell with DVI so both are in theory receiving the same digital input.

I need to calibrate the Dell to get as close a match to the HP but I think it will make life much easier and a quicker workflow!
 
I also use Lightroom with 2 monitors. Most usually, I'll have a grid on the left monitor, and the full screen of the selected shot on the right monitor. I find it very handy when going through picks and rejects from a shoot as I can track where I am as I go through it.

More useful though is having LR running on one, and a web browser or Photoshop or whatever on the other. Much more real estate. I cant stand it having only one monitor now - it feels too restrictive.

I know what you're saying about the extra real estate, after less than a day and I don't think I could go back to just one monitor again!!
 
if you go with two monitors have a look for a simple program called ultramon - makes it really easy to swap stuff about open certain progs on particular monitor etc.
 
I use dual monitors with Lightoom, I don't think I could go back to a single screen for editing.

Most modern graphics cards will let you use both outputs at the same time, so there shouldnt be a problem connecting your spare monitor, although you might need a HDMI-DVI adaptor for your PC.
 
I run dual monitors with LR3. I have the 2nd screen set to duplicate the centre part of the main screen turned into the studio whilst I am doing tethered shooting. It is very helpful.
