Dust in Viewfinder :(

Rocket blower would be a good start - don;t be tempted to use a brush or cloth on the focus screen or under the prism.
 
its actually inside the viewfinder i think though? as a blow so far hasnt made it move .. i can see it in the focusing screen but not on the lcd or in the images?
 
Some cameras have a removable vewfinder-eyepiece that allows for prescription dioptre lenses to be fitted. Try uncrewing yours and cleaning inside the bit you can reach.
Use a lens cloth and/or cotton ear-bud - wipe carefully, then blow off using a rocket blower or a bit of 'huff' if you're not a drooling idiot like me...

As others have said, be very careful about trying to clean the mirror and focussing screen (both accessed through the lens-mount on the front of the camera).
You may end up depositing more dust there or worse, scratching it...
 
If it does, then it just unscrews...anti-clockwise on Nikons.

Newer cameras have to have the shutter-curtain closed beforehand, older ones just unscrewed. Usually when you didn't want them to...lol

Here's an old F3 with the removable bit 'removed'...you can see the marks surrounding the eyepeice where it used to sit.

lol - the tutorial i just saw removed the focusing screen? im guessing thats not it?
 
You can't remove the eyepiece on a 50D

If your seeing it in the viewfinder chance are it's on top of the focusing screen.

If you feel up to it and your very carefull find a youtube demo of changing the focus screen, and see how they take out the screen.

Now look through your viewfinder, has the dust gone ?

If it has then it's actually on the screen, if not a good blow ith a big rocket blower not one of theose titchy things should dislodge it and blow it out of the body.

If it's on the screen try blowing it off. If you can see it and it's stuck try with a camera brush, one with very fine hairs, usuallu badger or squirrel, Don't use q-tips or you may end up shelling out for a new screen at about £25

Ps I have some crap on my screen that a rocket blower wont shift. I'm just leaving it where it is :D

its defo not "on" the screen as ive blown and wiped .. so must be on the focus screen!

balls lol it can stay there till i get angry enough :P
 
Never had any problem removing the screen for cleaning on any cameras I've owned. Haven't needed to do it yet on the 40D but can't imagine it's any different. Just be careful and you'll be fine :)
