Seems like I have a nice big anoying lump of black on my sensor.
Whats the best and safest way to get rid of it and what does it usually got for a complete clean professionally?

You could try a Giottos Rocket blower to see if that can remove it.

If not, you could Purchase a cleaner such as an Arctic Butterfly and do it yourself. So long as you're careful, there's no reason to break your camera.

The other alternative is a proper Canon clean. Don't know the costs of this though.

Give it a blow with a rocket blower, camera held lens mount facing down. If that doesnt work give it a wet clean or try an arctic butterfly etc. It really is no problem. The first time i did mine i managed to smear oil from the shutter all over the sensor and thought NO!! spoke to the local camera shop and they gave me a lenspen and that sorted the smears out and its been clean ever since.

FITP sells all the gear you need in the forum advertisers section.

I'd forget about getting Canon to clean it as the first time it happened to me that's what I did and all Canon did was move the dust spots about.

To me the only way you're going to get your sensor clean and keep it clean is to DIY. I always try a rocket blower first and it that doesn't shift it I do a wet clean.

I do a test at small aperture before setting out for the day by taking an out of focus shoot of a piece of A4 paper or a white door. The theory being that it's much better to clean the camera before taking shots rather than sit and clone dust out of hundreds of shots and possibly have shots spoilt beyond recovery.

Although I'm good at cleaning my sensor I do think that this is an issue that the manufacturers really should devote more effort into solving more effectively.

Good stuff. I'm going to get my own cleaning kit and this is the reason why.

Shot on a neutral blue image on my screen at F32 (as I was using a Macro lens). Desaturated to see the dust more clearly.

This is the result of 3 years of switching lenses and a bit of lazyness on my part. Still cleaning shouldn't be too hard

Calumet charge what I thought was a very reasonable £35 inc VAT for a sensor clean on a D3 and did it in under an hour, Lehmanns in Stoke wanted £58.75
