I wonder if anyone can help on this one. After changing lenses the other day i have notice a dust spot when I look through the viewfinder. I have cleaned the sensor with the arctic butterfly. No change, then with a swab, and it's still there. However, the spot doesn't appear on the images I have taken even when magnifying on my pc. What is the problem??:help:

Probably just a spec of dust on the mirror just give it a light blow with a rocket, don't try cleaning it ith anything else to start with, it could also be dust got into the viewfinder but not so likely, try the blower first and see how it goes.

It's probably on the focus screen.

Tried blowing on and swabbing the mirror. It's still there!! Gordon mentioned the focus screen. Not sure where that is. Is it within the three small square holes below the sensor???

If you have a changeable focus screen, dust can sometimes find it's way in there, remove it quick blow & it will cure it.

Hi Peter,

I'm still a bit new to this. It's a 500d. I dont know what the focus screen is. I havent seen anything on it in the handbook.??

Hi All,

thanks for the advice. Just had a quick Google on focus screens and it worked. Only problem now is I hope I havent damaged the sensor by swabbing it!

If you only learn one thing from this thread - make it this........

.....Don't ever touch the mirror again.......with anything.

Sorry Alan, I was out in the sunshine. Sounds like you sorted it now. I've never had to swab anything yet, i've been lucky that the rocket blower has always managed to sort it.

Why are pople soo worried about cleaning mirrors, with the right stuff it's as easy as a sensor clean.

Because if you've ever damaged a mirror using the lightest of touches (as I have, on an old film camera) then you'll never do it again.

As has somebody here who wiped out her focus points whilst cleaning the mirror, and had to send the camera for repair

I agree. This is the first time I have put a swab into the innards. You hear such disaster stories. Anyway, I think I got away with it.

Has anyone removed a focus screen for cleaning??

The little focus squares aren't on the mirror. At least not on any camera with a mirror that I've ever owned. They're on the focus screen aren't they?

I've cleaned my mirror lots of times, not as many times as I've cleaned my sensor but still lots of times and without causing any damage. If in doubt though just use a blower.

Yes they are. But she still managed to disable them whilst cleaning the mirror.
