Hi All

So what discs do you use for putting large amount of images on? about 400 - 600 shots onto? And which is the best to get and cheapest! Dont ask much do I. And do you do anything to improve the cover? like print a new one etc.... Just interested as I have done some family shoots and am going to try and do my best to make it look top noch.

Thanks all

Nearly everything I do now is put on to Lightscribe dvd's, I find it much easier to put an image and text on the actual dvd face, then they are put into an empty jewel case with no cover or label. I get most of my discs from 7 Dayshop very reasonably priced and free delivery.

CDs will give you greater peace of mind...if one is scratched then the others will (should!) be fine, whereas with DVD you're placing all your eggs in one basket. But what is the likelihood of a DVD becoming unreadable?

DVDs obviously save on space, and save on time when searching for an image - if you don't have an archiving system put it place at least.

Cost wise, the difference seems to be pretty much negligible per disc these days, although you will need less DVDs therefore they're cheaper :)

OK cool, been looking at a lightscribe but not sure which one to get. As for discs for the time being what would i need to get now to hold about 500 ish images at low res? or full res. As I never bothered with discs not a clue what to get Do i get cd-r and what is the best size to get.... any help would be grateful

It will all depend on the total file size, Cd's hold 700mb and dvd's will hold 4.7gb unless of course you get dual layer but these are still quite expensive, so its a case of either or. Your best bet would be to get a box of both cd and dvd then you can decide what to put your images on once you know how may and what size the file is.

We've had so many issues with DVDs becoming corrupted over time (as little as 3 years), that we're no longer permitted to use them for archiving. instead we have to copy everything to stand-alone HD and that drive is copied to another drive before being put on the main server at HQ Land - it then gets sent to the Imperial War Museum and is put on their main server to form part of the National Archive.
I've had two calls this month about stuff from Iraq in 2004/2005 that has been corrupted and therefore lost permanently...

CDs and DVDs are ok to send to clients but not for archiving - with a 1TB drive costing as little as £65, why would you take the risk?

I tend to back up to 2 external HDDs and also to either CD or DVD depending on folder size. I use Verbatim disks and so far have had no problems with corruption. The optical disks are kept in a cool, dry, dark place and the oldest get checked every few months.

If I'm burning disks for family members, I try to send them the pick of the bunch rather than every relevant shot, so a CD will almost always hold enough for the purpose. I also reduce the files to a suitable size for them - most people just want to be able to see the pics on screen, so I have a few Batch command sets in CS to reduce to 900 x 600 pixels and similar for screen use as well as to 6x4 inch prints. If people want bigger prints, I'll do the printing for them.

i personally find harddrives less reliable
and in my experience they fail more/dont last as long as cds and dvds

DVD's in theory are the better option because the data layer is sandwiched but the bit density is also a lot higher than CDs.

I'm in the process of doing some tests for my-self as to the longevity of DVD for archive. I'll try and remember to post regular updates.

There is not way to permanently archive anything! Even diamonds turn to dust in time.

Right sorry if every one not understood or ive not explained correct. I need the cd's or dvd's to put images on ( weddings actually ) so its not for back up its for the clients to view the low res images to select images for albums. so hence the question about large amount of images. I have to HD already which I back up. thanks all for the replys so far.

I would say it depends on what the total size of the files are, if less than 700mb use CDs , if not use DVDs, unless you want to use more than one disc.

My personal choice would be to use a flash drive, are very cheap nowadays and easier for people to access on their PC IMO, also if they are giving them back to you then you can use again.

Well to things not everyone has a computer and also Im not sending out a Usb Pen with wedding photographs on complete silly expecting clients to send them back. Its not practical, dont you think and especially when your customers dont live local. Ive decided to go with Dvd's cos I can put my lowres and full res images on. some for family and some for clients. Thanks all on your help and advice

Hard Disks.

Edit: Just read the whole thread, sorry. One of the media is more scratch resistant, just google for it. If it doesn't fit on 1 disc, use the larger medium.

You can get USB sticks really quite cheap now- get your name put on them & they will remember everytime they plug it in (talking about £4-8 for 2-4gb)
