Hey everyone, I just had a quick question about the E-series lens I'm using on my D3100. When I turn the aperture ring on the lens nothing will happen if the lens was at f/1.8 until I flick the catch at the back of the lens. So when I do get the aperture set to something like f/11 and start mounting it to the camera I think the catch is....catching... on something and resetting it to f/1.8. So I'm just wondering if this is a faulty lens or am I being hopeless and not using it properly :shrug:

Oh well, super bokeh images can keep me amused for a wee while anyway :lol:

When you attach the lens to the camera, the aperture needs to be set at f1.8. You can change the aperture when the lens is attached to the camera.

The lens should be set to the smallest aperture (highest f no.) on the manual aperture ring, usually f/22, before mounting on the camera. When mounted on the camera, the camera will hold the aperture wide open until you shoot, then it will stop down to the aperture you set on the camera just before the shutter opens.

However, you should not have to flick the lever to get the aperture to close down from wide open when turning the aperture ring with the lens off the camera. Sounds like you have sticky aperture blades.

Gave that a shot but it still doesn't seem to be making a difference. Thanks though, should probably invest in one of the newer ones anyway! :bonk:
 
you will have to use the aperture ring on the lens to change the aperture ,in fact i think you will have to have the camera in manual before it will work

I think this might be the issue. I can see there's something on the blades when they are at the smallest aperture so that might be the problem. Thanks for your help.

AFAIK the E series lenses do not have a CPU, so no AF or metering so M mode only. The aperture is still controlled from the body on modern bodies though, so the manual aperture ring needs to be set to smallest aperture.
