E1 or sony a700

i am considering swapping my olympus e1 for a sony a 700 .....what do you think i should do ...solider on with the e1 or .... be brave and convert to sony... i'm stumped...:thinking:
 
What do you shoot? What olympus lenses do you own? What do you want to do that your current kit or further investing in olympus wouldn't do just as well as sony?

It's hard to say what you should do without knowing anything about your photography ;).
 
Oooh, I loved my E-1 - fantastic to handle and gorgeous JPEG's SOOC.... the Sony will be light years ahead in every respect though, apart from the handling perhaps. Only you can decide....
 
Invest in better glass perhaps? You are using entirely kit lenses - and you will NOT get that quality from Sony kit lenses. My advice would be stay where you are and maybe hunt out a 12-60mm if you want a really good general zoom, or maybe a Sigma 30mm 1.4 for the portraiture? Even a Voigtlander 25mm f0.95 if you don't mind Manual focus?
 
No amount of money spent on lenses or anything else for the E-1 will get away from the fact that it's only 5mp, the screen is awful, you have no IS and anything above 400ISO is pretty awful.... still doesn't make it a dog though... :D
 
FIL has a 700 and loves it, getting really good shots and as above, has IS built into the body - so any lens used has the option of IS available.

Be aware though, I understand the Sony's have a habit of stripping the gears in some Sigma lenses (older ones I think)

Don't know much about the E1 so can't give you a direct comparison.

What lenses do you have for the E-1 at the moment? That's what would would make me decide to stick or twist.....
 
I don't think any of the lenses you have would be enough to keep me with Olympus. 14-54 or 12-60 would be a different matter. The E-1 may be only 5mp but it does have a bit of magic about it. I've spent a lot of time looking at images from it and am often tempted to buy one. My searching has suggested to me that the Fuji S5 pro and Canon 5D (original) both have some magic of their own. A portrait photographer wanting to move on from the E-1 could do a lot worse than either of those two. And each has a sound upgrade path for the future. The S5 Pro will cost less and it seems easier to find mint examples but on the other hand the 5d has all that lovely full-frameness. Wish I hadn't sold my 5D and I'd like to try an S5 Pro one day.

Getting on a bit now, but still a very reasonable body considering what you pay for them.

To be honest, if you're considering canon I'd take a serious look at the 5D mark 1 (aka 5D 'classic'). It'll be a little slower than a 20D, but you get the full frame sensor with a bigger leap in ISO performance and more creative possibilities with it's shallower DoF.
That or a 40D, which is much closer to the A700 than the 20D.

Anything below a 1D series will probably be a bit of a step down from your E-1 in build quality terms, but looking at your photos it doesn't strike me you need an exceptionally rugged body.
