I use one of these Made out of a spare quick release plate with the steel D loop tightener, then a piece of strong black cord with a washer on the end of it Works a treat!

If I have to take a shot at arms length with my compact, I hold the camera in one hand, and put some tension on by holding the neckstrap in my other hand and pulling back slightly.

I think Amateur Photographer have poopooed that idea. They did an article about stabilisation and tested it and said it was more wobbly if anything. Perhaps there is a knack to it they didn't know about.

It's a sort of reverse monopod, and I would have thought it would work to some extent. And you could leave image stabilisation switched on as well.
