Says brand new canon lens, then in () says White box

what does that mean?

Probably originally been part of a kit, hence it has a plain white card box, rather than the regular retail version.
 
I remember reading that refurbished canon stock is repackaged in white boxes to distinguish it from the normal Canon stock in branded boxes. I could be totally wrong, but I would double check if you intend to bid.

Hi, I've just done a google search and it seems that it could either be from a split up kit and sold off on its own or is refurbished stock - they put a sticker with 'refurbished' on the box, but this can easily be peeled off.
 
Hmmm, are refurbished rubbish?

I will probably not take the chance in this case.

No, if it's a refurbished lens it may be a lens that has been returned NLR, may have had a fault which has been fixed and so will carry a warrenty - if they are saying it's brand new, it will (as has been said above) have been split from a kit -> ask the seller, they should know.

Not sure if Canon do keep a list of serial numbers of lenses they have refurbished - might be worth a quick phone call.

I think it all depends on what lens and how much they are asking - is it a decent saving over other options ?
 
I have just emailed one of the sellers selling this lens in "a white box" just to see what they have to say as to why it comes in this type of box.

I am in the market for one myself and checked in Jessops yesterday and they are £359 in there but only £239 on ebay.

The add says they are brand new and offers a 1 year warrentry so will post here when he answers my email
