........ the bargain bucket kind , i.e. £2 with free post from china  , are they any good or should i get a proper canon one for my 17-85

I got a really cheap one for one of my lenses and have had no problems with it at all. At the price, you may as well go for it, worst case you've wasted £2, best case you've saved yourself a lot more :D

Got one for my 50mm f1.8 great bargain! Nicely packed and just the same as my other Nikon hood.

Had one on my Canon 10-22 ef-s. You could hardly tell the cheapy one from a real one :D

I suffer from brand snobbery and was thus forced to spend £lol on proper Canon hoods for my 10-22 and 17-55 :(

The aftermarket ones are pretty much identical but often lack the "soft coated" interior surface which cuts down reflections. I try to convince myself that this is worth the price alone but usually fail :(

looks good to me then , cheers all

I bought a bayonet fitting type and it is loose. As the lens is a few years old, it could be a bit of wear I guess. I put a microdot of superglue and it seems to hold it on and 'clicks' off without any trace if i need to. Not ideal but a proper hood is about £25-30 and who knows, it might be the same.

LOL

At last someone admitting to be a brand snob, raise a glass to that man.

The cheap one I got off ebay for my 10-22 had a sprayed Matt black surface. To be honest though there was that little of it I reckon it was a complete waste of time just like the free one I got with my 17-40L.

The only thing I would check is, is the inside is matt finished - otherwise you could get reflection.

I've had an aftermarket one for my daughters 55-250 lens and was happy with it, I managed to get a genuine one for a very good price and being able to compare them side by side, there was a noticable diff between the 2, the canon felt more solid and sturdy and attached to the lens more firmly. Like I said though, I was happy with the aftermarket one, until I was able to compare side by side.

i have aftermarket ones for my 100mm macro and 50 1.4. Never had a problems with either. Different finish to the ones i have on the L lenses, both interior and exterior, no felt lining. The bayonet fits tight too.

not sure about aftermarket hoods in general but the one i got with my 85 is complete rubbish, really flimsy and I am going to replace it as soon as possible with the proper Canon one.

I brought one from China/Ebay for my 15-85mm (EW-78E) - which was rubbish!

Could see the petals between 15 -30mm (in fact could still see the RHS petal when the LHS petal had disappeared from view). Also the large petals were at the sides, not at the top.... And yes it is marked as EW-78E.
Inside is felt material rather than paint though.

Have ditched it and and purchased the Canon version via Bristol Cameras - good price and excellent service..

Incidentally, side by side you can see clearly the size difference.... Never again !
