I am amazed how many people on ebay selling lenses put things like, hardly used, selling as i dont use, used 3 times, only brought for my friends wedding so no longer needed.
It seems people spend a lot of money on things they dont use lol.

Thanks for that - gives me some idea on what to put in the description for when I decide to post my D300s & brand new 35mm AF-D f2 in the TP classifieds - might sell a bit quicker than the usual description stuff

A quick look on ebay will give you as many one liners as you will ever need:lol:

it is indeed amazing what people say, surely they get caught out when the lens arrives with specs in and dinks in the outer casing....

Caveat Emptor, I believe.
Pity that doesn't translate as 'beware of lying skank', but it fits.

I have a neighbor with a posh caravan in his drive that hardly ever moves, a bike in his garage that is blocked in by the jet-ski that has a flat tyre on the trailer and the unused mountain bikes that are still covered in filth from several years ago....

There is a measure of protection, I mean if someone states that the lens is in good condition and working order and it arrives with either, dents, dings, scratches, fungus or doesn't work, then the item is not as described so you are entitled to return the goods and get a refund, even if the person has put "no returns".

The downside to this is if you have paid via paypal, they will deduct paypal fee's on the refund and of course you loose the postage paid sending it back.

*crosses everything that the sigma 170-500 he just bought on there is ok*

Non stock photos can also give a good indication, but then it's quite easy to find a picture of a mint lens/body etc

My main defence is I look at the feedback, it's costing me proper money (ie I will miss that amount) I make a point to check the feedback and look at it's quality and where it's come from. Lots of private sales with glowing feedback is a sign of a badun. It's usually pretty easy to spot a scammer as opposed to a average joe.

The thing is most of them discriptions will be a lot of BALLS. I mean a lot of lenses that have been well looked after can be years old but still look like new, especially if the box and other packaging is kept, unless there is a date stamp nobody will know, thats why alot of lens keep there value so well.

I've been scanning ebay for a couple of weeks now looking for a decent starter DSLR. I certainly felt alot safer bidding on some items than on others, feedback isn't a good indicator anymore, in terms of honesty in the description.

I think I've seen the same pictures 3 or 4 times on different auctions/sellers, even the descriptions are similar, it would give buyers alot more confidence if sellers put some effort into their descriptions rather than CTRL+C, CTRL+V

The best one I saw recently for a Canon 350D - 'Brand new, never used!' :suspect:

Ha I wonder where it had been hiding :).

Personally I always look on here if I am lookign for somthing, alot better prices and levels of customer service IMO. I only scan Ebay now for an absolute bargin.

ebay is a bit of a minefiled. You get some good things and some bad things. I tend to stick with only really buying cheapish items now after a couple of bad experiences. I bought a used computer that had pirate windows on that the seller genuinely didn't know was on there. I had to go to trading standards to get my money back and to be honest I felt quite sorry for the seller as he had been skanked by the person who sold it to him.
I also bought a "totally mint" Canon 100-400 that turned out to be full of dust. The seller was very reluctant to give me my money back and I had to go through paypal's SNAD process to get the money back.

Be careful in the world of fleabay. :nono:

They shouldn't...

If the refund is processed properly through paypal and within 60 days (I think it is 60) any fees paid by the seller will also get refunded.
