Any of you togs who edit/send from pitch/court/ring side - have you used an iPad / iPad Pro ever to edit and send your images?

As someone who travels to jobs all over the place - sometimes going with minimal gear is something I need to do, and over the last winter/summer I tried few jobs with just a single body, two lenses and iPad Pro.
(pretty handy when you have to use budget airlines and decide to travel with hand luggage only ... )

The Lightroom Mobile app on iPad pro is more than good enough to do the basic edits/corrections one does to images before wiring them off. This has taken me some time to get used to, as I have mainly been a Photoshop guy.. so Lightroom feel different and initially I wasn't sure where the images ended, etc.
Sometimes I even feel it is quicker to get the locked images from me CF Fast card to my iPad - than it is to transfer them to the MacBook Pro.
And the edits with finger or iPencil are quite quick as well - and don't take longer than in Camera Raw (editing JPEG) on the MacBook.

One niggle is that you can't at the moment add the IPTC info in Lightroom - so need to use a separate app for that. But there are few free ones about - and I've even managed to get sort of a system of 'code replacements' on one of them.
Not as a smooth as PhotoMechanic - but still quicker than typing everything from scratch.

Also sending the pics is almost the same as MacBook - if the reporter is at the game, it is AirDrop to them.
Or with the FTP clients that are available to iPad - it's same as on MacBook.

Initially I tried this about 6 months ago - and have to say that there might be something to be said about working with just an iPad at games.

Has anyone else given this a try, either seriously or just for 'fun'?? If so, what sort of experiences have you have.. pros or cons vs using laptop?

Sure, it is a bit of an excess to have both MacBook Pro and iPad - but with on the Windows side the Surface Pro already starting to replace laptops.. might not be long before same happens on Apple side.

I've not tried it personally but I spoke to a photographer at the Old Trafford test match last month and he said he did everything via his iPad. I think he was the specialist cricket tog for The Times.

Interested in what app you used for IPTC data?

Never tried, how do you tether to an iPad?

As with most things Apple... needed to buy an adapter. So one from the Lightning Port.. Lightning to USB.
Then connect the USB cable to the camera (uses the same end bit as most USB card readers.. so there's always few laying about).

Can't have it (as far as I know) connected all the time - so in that way it is a bit fiddly. As you shoot .. then transfer to the iPad.
Not a perfect workflow - but one that does do the job.
Looking through the net for more smooth ways to get it done.

As said, images then open in Photos - and just select the ones to transfer (or all), and you are ready to go.

There are some Lightning to SD card adapters as well - which would work if my camera would use SD cards.
Pretty much most USB card readers won't work.. as iPad wants them to be 'powered'.

At the moment, using PicturePro - don't think it's been updated for a while.
So it does feel a bit clunky - but does the job.
There are other apps as well - so testing them out every now and then (most decent ones you need to pay for though...).

Of course - you are able to edit in PicturePro as well. So that could leave Lightroom out.. but with the PicturePro not been updated for a while, the editing is a bit out of date/slow/etc.

Good to hear that I am not the only one :) Guess it is something that works for others, and not others.
But it is worth a try.. with the way tablets are coming along...

I use ps express on my ipad for a lot of my editing. Just transfer from sd card to ipad using the sd adapter. Works for me

My lumbering old MBP 2008 fits the bill, I can't see, aside from a little weight saving, what this gives you, especially captioning, live uploading etc...

Don't think iPad editing has (yet) taken over from using a laptop ... of course most laptops that we use on pitch side are a total over-kill for what editing we actually need to do.
But I do think that the tablets will soon be there for most of our computing needs...
(and for me - saving the weight/space was the key reason for trying this out in the first place)

Should probably dabble with the PS Express myself... haven't tried it yet properly...

If we could get the Peli's and the 'big whites' lighter, now that would be a real weight saving - perhaps Canon's DO is the future?

I use a Asus T100ta with Photomechanic and Photoshop. works well enough although I lock and load not shoot tethered not, although its not apple it integrates with my mac fine

Guess I should have named in the thread that other brands of tablets are available :)
Do you use the Asus as a tablet - or with the keyboard on it?
