Just used Canon Zoombrowser to extract some clips and went to load them into Microsoft Windows Movie Maker and it says it can't import these files presumably as they are MOV files which is Apples format.

Can anyone recommend a file converter or some free editing software that can join a few clips together, possibly adding a sound file would be nice.
 
you can still use movie maker, you just need to convert the files first. WHich you should do whatever program you use as the files straight out of the 7d are a hog to edit.

Super is a free video conversion program for windows, try that and see what you get out to use in MM. expect the file sizes to balloon when you uncompress them though
